The Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute (SAAMI) isn’t the only institution which defines specifications for ammunition. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) does the same – and their standards for 9mm are different.

SAAMI says the standard max chamber pressure for 9mm is 35,000 psi. NATO, on the other hand, sets the round’s max pressure higher at 36,500 psi. The result? Somewhat snappier recoil, followed by the flatter trajectory which simplifies target shooting.

But here’s an interesting thing. SAAMI max pressure for 9mm +P is 38,500 psi. That makes 9mm NATO less powerful than +P, although we still recommend playing it safe by only firing this ammo in a firearm that is rated for +P.

If you took away its NATO designation, this would be Winchester’s usual “white box” 9mm target ammo. You’ve got your nonmagnetic full metal jacket round nose projectiles. You’ve got your unblemished reloadable brass cases. You’ve also got your noncorrosive (yet unsealed) Boxer primers.

This is not military surplus ammo. No NATO soldiers have ever touched it. It’s fresh as a baby’s B-hind, and all yours to enjoy at the range.
