The 20 Gauge: not quite as heavy a hitter as its more popular cousin, but perfectly capable of putting down any deer or hog all the same. All you need is the right ammo!
Here’s precisely the right ammo for taking medium game (within reasonable distances, such as the ones typically afforded by dense woodland). This shell is loaded with just over 1 ounce of #3 buck (each pellet 1/4” in diameter, ~23.4 grains in weight; smaller than 00 buck, which is 1/3” in diameter and ~53.8 grains in weight). The hard lead pellets are buffered, meaning they are surrounded by supple plastic granules which compress during ignition so as to prevent the shot pellets from flattening out. The result is a tighter and more pattern (the shell’s wad is nothing more than traditional felt, although that’s not of much concern considering the shorter distance the shell’s smaller shot is meant to cover).
This ammo would also prove invaluable during a home defense scenario. Double-aught might have more stopping power, but twenty 1/4” diameter lead balls traveling at the speed of sound are hardly an anemic force. The smaller pellets may also reduce the risk of over-penetration – a plus if you’re defending yourself in a densely populated area.
