The #3 buckshot pellet is less popular than its bigger 00 buck brother. It is only 76% as wide, and 43% as heavy – but that comes with a huge advantage. One normal-sized 20 Gauge shell holds 20 of the things, which means it throws a way denser pattern AND poses significantly lower (but *not zero*) risk of over-penetrating a threat.

This shell is designed to soak as much of its lead into the target as possible. Its shot pellets are protected by buffering (i.e. small plastic granules that absorb recoil energy during ignition), so they remain rounder as they’re pushed through the barrel at supersonic velocity. Rounder pellets are more aerodynamic, and therefore travel in the straight lines which equate to a tight pattern!
