The great John Moses Browning didn’t invent the semi-automatic shotgun to make your life more complicated.* Just the opposite, in fact. He wanted to make things E-Z.

And so too does Winchester, as evinced by their AUTOBUCK line of ammunition! These 12 Gauge buckshot loads are 3-1/2 dram equivalent, which is safely above the minimum that reliably cycles the great majority of autoloaders.

This shell’s not loaded with 00 buckshot. It features less common yet no less useful #1 buckshot instead. That shot size is ~91% as wide as 00, and weighs only ~75% as much; the reasons why this 2-3/4” shell holds 33% more pellets, and strikes with relatively less force at each point of impact.

A larger quantity of smaller buckshot is ideal when you’re trying to maximize your probability of hitting the target. Lower-momentum buckshot is also less likely (but by no means incapable) of cutting clean through a home invader. No ammo outright eliminates the risk of over-penetration, but #1 buck is less likely to penetrate as deeply as 00 buck all the same.

* Technically, it was a couple of Frenchmen who actually *invented* the semi-auto shotgun, but Browning’s design was the first practical and popular one.
