Russia is notable for producing extraordinary quantities of steel-cased ammunition. But that’s not the only country where economical 7.62x39mm ammo is made. Sterling of Turkey is also producing the steel cases that thrifty AK-47 and SKS owners love!

This ammo isn’t just more affordable because of its brass-free cases. Its 123 grain FMJ projectiles also have predominantly steel jackets, with thin copper-washed exteriors for improved cosmetics.

Please note the compromises you have to make when you invest in steel-cased 7.62x39 ammo. Its cases are not reloadable, as steel does not return to its original dimensions following ignition. Its bullets aren’t welcome at many indoor ranges, as the steel they contain can damage range equipment (and also poses a higher risk of creating sparks).

This is not old Soviet Army surplus. It was manufactured recently at a modern facility, and as such features noncorrosive Berdan primers. Berdan primers are yet another cost-saving feature, albeit one that doesn’t forfeit reliable ignition.
