Many Americans deserve a lot of acclaim for designing great handgun cartridges – but man, did one Austrian guy ever nail it. If you want to put Georg Luger’s great idea to good use at the range, then we’ve got just the (American-made) 9mm ammo for the job!

“UMC” isn’t a designation. It’s a company Remington merged with long ago, and the brand name for Big Green’s line of high-volume target ammunition. As you ought to expect of a UMC load, this 9mm cartridge is nothing too fancy. It’s loaded with its caliber’s heaviest common projectile – 147 grains – and therefore subsonic (990 fps out of Remington’s 4” test barrel). Perfect if you’re firing through a suppressor (noting that the FMJ’s unjacketed base will deposit lead residue on a can’s baffles).

Remington clocked this round’s 100-yard velocity at 899 fps. We calculate that it has a .185 G1 ballistic coefficient, which means you can reasonably expect this approximate trajectory if your own pistol’s barrel is also 4” long: 0yds: -0.2” → 20yds: 0.7” → 40yds: 0.0” → 60yds: -2.2” → 80yds: -6.0” → 100yds: -11.3”.
