Looking for a more affordable point of entry into the .223 Rem varmint and predator hunting ammo world? Or would you just like to mix things up, and see how the .223’s 45 grain bullet’s zippy muzzle velocity performs in person? Then Remington UMC is just what you’re looking for!

This cartridge’s bullet weighs about 18% lighter than a conventional M193 spec load’s 55 grain FMJ, and its muzzle velocity is approximately 10% higher for it. That helps the bullet cover more ground in the same amount of time, which translates to a flatter trajectory. The bullet does go subsonic at around 550 yards, however. Its lower mass also increases the effect of wind drift, so it’s not likely to be as accurate as a heavier bullet at long range (.173 G1 BC; 3,550 fps muzzle velocity recorded with 24” test barrel).

The JHP works fine as a target bullet, and cannot attract a magnet. But should it strike an animal, its ability to mushroom and shed fragments of itself will produce exactly the effect a hunter hopes for.
