6.8 SPC Rocks!
Years ago, when Ruger came out with the SR556 in 6.8 SPC in the arguably Ruger/Troy rifle, it became my first AR platform, with the exception of my early model Kel Tec PLR-16 ''pistol.'' I went as soon as possible and on the spot set up some 4x4 lumber against a medium sized oak tree and began making extremely tight groups completely and evenly through the single boards and into the tree. Using the rear aperture site and front post at an unsupported 80 yards or so. My first impression was the lack of the old twang I was used to from the M16A1/A2 I had accustomed to from the Marines. I was using the original Silver State Armory 115 HPBT rounds that were about the only choice then. Before the 26 round magazine was emptied I immediately fell in love with the round as I watched the oak tree slowly began leaning and then completely fell over, chopped in half ballistically and showing how the rounds literally had exploded in the center of the green tree! I already had a beloved RPK-47 that I had maximized its accuracy by some mods to the sights and polishing the rough from the bore. At my 20 acre ''compound'' I'd never much needed any shots beyond 300 yards but the RPK had been improved enough to consistently hit tennis balls ''on the deck'' at 350 yds using a replacement bipod, a steady use of soft point rounds and a 2k round break in. Well, the same day I dropped the oak tree I put about 6 rounds quickly into a matching oak tree to find it, as well, completely fallen by the next morning. My facebook pictures showed a Glock knife stabbed into the center of the first oak as a size reference and since I have stayed with SSA and PPU 110 and 115 gr 6.8 SPC rounds in BTHP and similar quickly bought to the amount of some 2500 rds and regularly bought as many original Ruger 26 round magazines as possible over the years. I later bought an original 5.56 mm Bushmaster AR-15 and added a gas piston conversion and an OPMOD Vortex holograph sight, and luckily a Para Ordnance GI Expert 1911 .45 ACP, before Remington got their hands on either weapon! I got the Para the very day after a hubbies' wife discovered his buy and was able to buy a new one at used price! The Bushmaster and PLR-16 share ten MagPul 60 rd drum mags which rock! I have a ton of mil and Stoner box mags but love the drums. As far as PPU-it is also the main round for my Zastava 7.62x25mm handgun as well, although I love all ''Spec I'' 6.8 SPC because just like my Corps M60 days, I scoff at supposed range limits on many cartridges. Now if only MagPul will make 6.8 SPC drums! Giving all due respect-I also LOVE my Remington Tac 13, 1100 and 870 Wingmaster which is now a ten shot extended tube 12 gauge with a Blackhawk wire top-folding recoil system stock.
