The barrel is heat treated to RC 40-42 then the Salt Bath Nitride coating increases the surface hardness to RC 60. Lone Wolf AlphaWolf barrels feature exacting tolerances to allow for drop in installations while the fluting creates a path for heat and debris to safely escape.

Will your 40 cal mags except 9 mm rounds. Is the barrel a drop in and go?

No you will need to switch to 9mm Shield magazines. Check out item # MAG-428-161 and 148244 and MAG-8540-077 and MAG-8540-079.
This barrel fits into m&p compact 3.6 inch ?

Yes, this AlphaWolf barrel is compatible with both Shield 1.0 and 2.0 models.
My current 40 sw barrel does not have the knurl on the end. With this still fit?

If your pistol is the Smith & Wesson M&P40 Shield or M&P40 Shield M2.0 it'll fit. This is a 9mm conversion barrel with a threaded muzzle. The "knurl" is actually a thread protector.
