Hornady Superformance: .223 Remington ammunition that throws lightweight lead-free polymer-tipped hunting bullets fast and hard!
This ammunition features Hodgdon Superformance powder, which is advertised to increase muzzle velocity without extra chamber pressure, recoil, muzzle blast, temperature sensitivity, fouling, or loss of accuracy. Hornady recorded the bullet’s 3,300 fps muzzle velocity using a 24” test barrel.
Admittedly, that is not an unusually high velocity for a 50 grain bullet to have. But the Copper alloy eXpanding does retain an abnormally large percentage of its velocity relative to its mass thanks to its sleek, grooved, balanced body, which ends in a Heat Shield polymer tip with a flat meplat to minimize drag variability. The .142 G1 BC bullet can carry 1,000+ ft lbs of energy to around 48 yards, if fired from a 24” barrel.
The CX may be environmentally friendly, though it isn’t particularly friendly toward whichever animal it hits. Its robust monometal body resists fragmentation; 95% minimum weight retention, by Hornady’s measure. Its polymer tip and nose cavity work together to force big expansion. It’s a complete package of deadly terminal ballistics!
