This ammo is not recommended for revolvers.
You can’t just thread a suppressor to the business end of your .45-70 Government rifle and call it a day. You’ve got to buy the right ammo if you want that suppressor to whisper your favorite tune!
Hornady didn’t embellish when they named this line of ammunition. Subsonic series .45-70 is exactly that: with a muzzle velocity around 50 fps lower than the speed of sound (24” test barrel).
Hornady makes an otherwise tame cartridge suitable for hunting by loading it with a jacketed hollow point that is *specifically engineered* for expansion after subsonic impact. The Sub-X’s special Flex Tip polymer insert is elastic enough to compress inside the nose cavity during and after impact, in which state it forces the surrounding jacket wall to break open quickly and splay out wide.
This probably comes as little surprise, but “flat trajectory” is not among this round’s selling points. The .45 cal behemoth has a high .285 G1 BC and excellent wind resistance to match, although it’s due to drop pretty swiftly after getting such a slow start out of the gate. Here’s what we mean:
• 0 yards: -1.5”
• 100 yards: 17.0”
• 200 yards: 0.0”
• 300 yards: -57.1”
• 400 yards: -159.2”
