Hornady’s mission was to develop a subsonic-optimized cartridge capable of hitting 1.5 times harder than the .300 AAC Blackout. They were successful the instant they finalized the .338 Advanced Rifle Cartridge.

Hornady recorded this round’s 1,050 fps muzzle velocity (which is ~75 fps lower than sonic) with a 16” barrel. They recorded its .375 G1 ballistic coefficient and 554 ft lbs striking energy at 300 yards using the same.

Remarkably, this round’s bullet can still undergo terminal expansion at 300 yards, because it is none other than the Sub-X. The flat-nosed bullet’s Flex Tip is appropriately named, as it is supple enough to compress and push outward under pressure. That force disrupts the grooved jacket, producing reliably wide expansion and inflicting an extremely injurious wound channel as a result.

Hornady loads their Subsonic label ammo at their Nebraska factory using top-of-the-line components. It’d be a right shame if these rounds’ cases wound up anywhere other than at a reloading station.
