Short-barreled rifles (SBRs) aren’t *too* overly particular about which ammo they fire. But if you would hunt or defend with your own SBR, then why not arm it with 5.56x45mm ammo that was specifically designed for it? That’s the very good idea behind Hornady BLACK!

This cartridge’s 75 grain bullet is intended for 10.5-11.5” barrels, in which it will produce virtually zero flash *or* residue. It will not overheat or foul a suppressor, and it emits a surprisingly soft report even if it doesn’t pass through such a device.

The bullet is the InterLock HD SBR: a soft point, which is engineered to exhibit high-scoring terminal performance according to the FBI test protocol. In other words, its penetration depth and expansion characteristics are both optimized to halt an attacker as effectively as possible.

This is the highest-quality SBR ammo Hornady produces, and possibly on the entire market, and comes complete with premium brass, reliable primers, and propellant that burns up quickly and almost entirely within so short a barrel.

I know the cartridges designed for a short barrel gun. Is it not advisable to shoot in a large barrel gun like an AR? What is the downside if that is true?
Answer: Hello James! I've posed this same question to Hornady before. Unfortunately, they appear to have declined to comment. This round is optimized for 10.5‑11.5" barrels. Most significantly, its powder is formulated to exhibit a full burn by the time the bullet has cleared an SBR's muzzle. Now, I don't foresee any reason why it should fail to perform correctly in as longer barrel. I don't expect a longer barrel would produce a significantly higher muzzle velocity, though. I would also advise of the significance of barrel twist. A 75 grain bullet would ideally be stabilised by a fast rate of twist: 1:6 to 1:8", specifically.
