Some people are irrationally worried about bear attacks. For example, if you live on Staten Island, then you’re probably safe (from bears, at least). But if you live somewhere a little more rural (i.e. nicer), then you’d do well to keep a .44 Magnum solution to bear-related problems close at hand!
This is Hornady’s answer to the bear question, though it’ll work wonders on boars, mountain lions, and rutting moose, too. Each Backcountry Defense label cartridge hurls its 240 grain bullet at a muzzle velocity of 1,620 fps (8” test barrel), which translates to 1,147 ft lbs striking energy at 50 yards; 943 ft lbs at 100.
Like all specialized large game handgun bullets, the Dangerous Game Handgun (DGH) projectile is designed to avoid undergoing terminal expansion in favor of achieving the deepest penetration possible. Its resilient protected point keeps the DGH’s lead core and copper jacket firmly locked together, thus preventing deflection that could have kept the bullet from traveling straight on its course to the ticker.
Don’t like the idea of lead smoke billowing all around you while you’re trying to empty out a cylinder accurately? Then you’ll love the DGH’s fully jacketed base, which prohibits lead vaporization on ignition.
