Federal Premium produces Tactical TRU 223 Rem ammunition for law enforcement officers’ AR-15s. If you want to chamber some of the very best in your home defense carbine, then you’re perfectly welcome to this ammo, too.

This cartridge’s 55 grain Hi-Shok soft point projectile does not have a bonded jacket. When subjected to the FBI test protocol, it achieves approximately 11.5” penetration upon striking heavy clothing and then ballistic gelatin at close range (specifically 10’). That is not considered an optimal result, although it does suggest (but doesn’t guarantee) a lower-risk of potentially disastrous over-penetration. During the same testing conditions, the Hi-Shok SP retains ~84% of its weight and expands to a diameter of ~.48” (noting that Federal used a 24” barrel to record these results).

This cartridge’s .222 G1 BC promises 694 ft lbs striking energy at 200 yards, followed by -7.7” drop 100 yards farther downrange (1.5” sight height). This premium reloadable brass-cased ammunition would also serve well for varmint hunting, but not for taking large game.
