Federal’s Syntech line of ammunition was originally intended for target shooting only. Its polymer-coated projectiles' ability to (A) eradicate metallic fouling, (B) minimize friction within the bore, (C) reduce the risk of splash-back, and (D) eliminate lead aerosolization on ignition suited it perfectly for that application.
BR> But then Federal rolled up their collective sleeves and fine-tuned the Syntech bullet for defense. This is that ammunition: .40 S&W everyday carry loads featuring *segmented* hollow point bullets.

The segmented hollow point doesn’t mushroom. It breaks apart into smaller pieces, somewhat like the Space Shuttle as it’s entering orbit. The SHP’s frontal section breaks down into three petals, which are capable of tracking just as many 6” or deeper wound channels. Its rear section retains the most mass, and accordingly maintains the momentum it needs to penetrate to a depth of 12” to 18”.

Federal came up with the preceding paragraph’s penetration data via the standard FBI test protocol. They apply to both (A) bare and (B) heavily clothed ballistic ordnance gelatin.
