Can these be used for self defense

Hi Shelton! This ammunition is absolutely capable of neutralizing a threat. That being said, the FMJ bullet is suboptimal for defense. Furthermore, Federal Champion is cheap target ammo: good at its intended application, but not as reliable as you'd want when your life is at stake. You want jacketed hollow point (JHP) ammo. JHP bullets expand after impact, which (A) maximizes trauma to the threat, and (B) reduces (but doesn't eliminate) the risk of over-penetration that could jeopardize innocent bystanders.
