There’s *a lot* of options when it comes to .223 Rem range ammo. You could spend days researching them all and zeroing in on the best one for your target shooting needs … or you could take the far more convenient and equally rewarding path, and just order yourself a few Federal Black Packs instead.

It won’t matter how many Black Packs you buy. You won’t want to put your rifle down until they’re all gone! Federal’s close attention to quality and consistency ensures clockwork performance out of all types of firearms and barrels of all lengths. So long as it’s chambered for .223 (or 5.56), it’s good to go!

This cartridge’s bullet weight and muzzle velocity are unquestionably the most popular for target shooting and plinking. If you’re even remotely familiar with .223/5.56 ballistics, then odds are your brain’s already dialed in to Black Pack performance.

And to top it all off? *Zero steel.* These rounds’ bullets can’t move a magnet. Neither can their cases, which are just as reloadable as they are brand spankin’ new.

Ran good
Ran through the box during a range trip. Grouping was good, no misfires, no failures. Sound and feel were consistent. I will buy again when it’s back in stock.

Barely acceptable bottom of the barrell
I bought two boxes of these, and, overall, they did okay. One rifle did just over a three inch group at 100 yards, and another did a 3.5 inch group.

I did some basic quality checks of a handful of rounds from each box. They measured and weighed well, nothing was grotesquely out of order, no bullets that were poorly seated or brass that was crooked. They weren't held to super tight tolerances, but this is affordable bulk ammo, not select match munitions.

I measured the ES/SD with a chronograph, and the ES was just over 100. Velocities were approximately 2950 from an 18" barrel, and just over 3000fps in a 20" barrel. (I'm at about 1000 feet above sea level.)

My one and only problem, which is why I rate this a four, is that I had one round that had a certifiable bad primer. The round had powder in it, but the primer did not go off after multiple strikes; and I tried in two different rifles. Beyond this one failure to fire, I had zero (0) failures to feed or eject. A failure to fire is pretty disheartening, but at least it wasn't a squib or catastrophic failure.

I'll probably buy Federal ammo again, but not this black box stuff. Why the four, then? I also reload ammo, and the brass worked out pretty good for that. Plus, Cheaperthandirty did a good job of timely shipping so I could get more ammo for a big range trip.
