Conventional self-defense ammunition is designed to neutralize human threats. *This* self-defense ammo is intended for very different kinds of threats – namely of the black bear and pig variety.
A conventional defense bullet expands so as to reduce its risk of striking a bystander. This .327 Federal Magnum cartridge’s 120 grain hard cast bullet is specifically designed *not* to expand. It is too hard to do so. Instead, it focuses all of its available energy into forcing its flat nose as deeply into the beast as it can. This increases the shooter’s odds of shutting down the animal’s heart, or some other organ it needs to continue its assault.
The hard cast projectile has a wide flat nose gas check profile. In addition to its aforementioned flat nose, that includes a base which promotes more efficient ignition in the interest of securing harder-hitting terminal performance.
This round’s advertised muzzle velocity and energy were recorded with a 6” barrel. Those figures reduce to 1,250 fps/501 ft lbs out of a Ruger SP101’s 3” barrel.
