This isn’t plinking ammo. This isn’t deer hunting ammo. This isn’t home defense ammo, either. This is the same 5.56 NATO ammunition Black Hills designed for the U.S. Navy’s Mk12 Special Purpose Rifle, which the South Dakotan company currently produces for sniper teams belonging to all branches of the U.S. military.
This is *accurate* ammo, which shoots sub-2″ groups at 300 yards (.64 MOA max per 10-shot group). Its bullet doesn’t just achieve such outstanding accuracy simply by being heavy. It is a Sierra MatchKing, which attains peak rotational stability by virtue of its swaged lead core and thin jacket (the latter of which is drawn to a concentricity standard of ±0.0003” in max variation). All other physical characteristics of a MatchKing are controlled just as strictly.
The MatchKing makes an effective varmint hunting bullet, although it cannot expand like a dedicated hunting bullet is designed to. It’s accordingly unfit for deer duty.
This is the MOD 1-C (commercial) variant of Black Hills’ coveted Mk 262 ammo. It’s produced on the same machinery and with the same components as the non-commercial variant; it’s just not subjected to the same test protocol as the ammo the government accepts.
This ammo is packaged 20 rounds per box, 23 boxes per steel Mil-Spec ammo can.
