Canvas water bags have been successfully used in desert environments for many years, and the war in Desert Storm was no exception.

U.S.G.I. Canvas Bota Water Bags are patterned after the old "radiator bags" used in the early 20th century and work exactly the same way.

Canvas bags would be presoaked in water causing the fibers to expand and seal the walls of the bag. Once filled with water, the bag was hung with a rope or strap from the top of the hood in front of the radiator of the vehicle. As the vehicle traveled down the road, the moist bag would stay cool through evaporation. The cool water could be poured into the radiator if the vehicle started to run hot or consumed by the passengers.

The Desert storm bags include a tie neck, double hanging straps, and a bottom hanging loop. Each bag is lightweight and can be folded or rolled for storage. Bags measure approximately 21" tall and 8-1/2" wide.

Bags are surplus, but appear to be in new, unissued condition. NSN # 3770-99-429-5192

"Used old versions back in the 70s in US desert southwest, worked great back then. These should just as well although I haven't tried them yet. Good way to carry water (once fibers are expanded by pre-soaking, starting 2 days before expected use), good way to cool the water (as water continues to ooze through canvas to evaporate off). NOT for long-term storage of water - if you need to store more than 2 or 3 days, use \"solid\" canteen."

"These are nice new bags. Wont know until I HAVE to use it if it's all it's cracked up to be. They were used in Desert Storm so I assume they must be good. Cheap enough to not really care. Don't buy assuming you'll use it as an addition to your BOB as you have to soak them for 48 hours before use."
