The M48 Mauser is a Yugoslavian military surplus rifle. They were built from 1950 to 1965 and most M48s were put into government storage shortly after they were manufactured.

These rifles are shipped coated in the protective grease "cosmoline" which needs to be cleaned out before the rifle is fired.

These rifles are not new, they are military surplus. They do not include an owner's manual nor a warrantee card. The manufacturer, the government of Yugoslavia, disintegrated in a series of wars starting in 1991. These rifles are sold "As is."

To remove cosmoline grease from a military surplus rifle we suggest an aerosol solvent such as Gun Scrubber or bake cleaner and a CLP such as Break Free or G96, and a good bit of "elbow grease"

"When I recieved my m48 I found it cleaner than I expected. After a good cleaning I took it to the range with my son and we shot it most of the afternoon with no problems. Only minor issue I had was the numbers on the bolt didn't match. It was fairly accurate the off had (some of to be my eye sight). I might buy another one. Great rifle."

"Nice M48 Yugo. Wood looks good, although my forearm was lighter in color than the stock, but a little stain helped. Bolt number matches floor plate. The stock had two sets of numbers, one set matches receiver. Shiny, mint bore. Bluing like new."

"Great value. Rifle looked almost brand new. Was not as hard to clean as I expected. Found an online manual for assembly and disassembly. Bolt was easy to breakdown. Two of my friends want one."

"The rifle looks quite nice but it came with a bent firing pin. If you intend on buying one of these rifles, please note that finding a replacement firing pin is extremely difficult. I have yet to find one website that carries the M48 firing pin or the Model 24 firing pin which also works in the M48. So until I find one, the Mauser remains silent =(But, let's end on an up note: the M48 is built very well and it is one of those rifles that \"just feels right\" in the hands. It does not come with a bayonet but does come with a relatively useful leather sling. Mine did not come with anything else."

"All numbers matching, strong rifling, and it came with a leather sling!"

"First, the overall look of the rifle was much like I expected. The metal was in better shape, but the wood was in rougher than I hoped. Disassembly was straight forward until I got to the bolt. As I took it apart, I noticed several sharp edges on the cocking piece. Upon cleaning it, I realized that, in fact, it was broken. My M48 is unusable, unless I can find a replacement part."

"It is an M48 with machined magazine floor plate. The rifle looks better than expected for a 1943 rifle! Nice bluing, almost in like new condition. Stock has minor scratches. All the numbers match, smooth action, shinny barrel, and strong rifling. It came with a leather sling. Cannot wait to clean it up and take it to the range. Extremely pleased with the purchase of this little piece of history! Get one as soon as you can!"
– Very nice M48!

"Lots of cosmoline. Appears they were issued, well taken care of, and then slathered up with cosmo and stored. The bore was mirror bright with sharp lands and sharp crown - YES! Good, tight action. The wood is not pristine, but is a nice hardwood with grain contrast. 90% bluing, good but mismatched bolt (no biggie). All other numbers match. Rifle has a nice feel and balance. Should be an excellent shooter. Lots of life left in this baby. Great chance to get an M48 in 8mm Mauser, that nobody has messed around with, at a very good price. Enjoy!"

"For the money, it's hard to beat. Took some time to clean it, and it came out nice. Shoots nice and smooth. Very accurate."

"Overall, the condition of the rifle was good. Bolt did not match, but that is not a big deal. While cleaning, I encountered more than just cosmoline. There was some rust in spots and on some parts throughout the rifle. My big complaint is a cracked stock in two places. I think it is repairable. Not a bad rifle for the money, but had hoped for a little better condition. It is a turkey shoot."

"Upon receiving the rifle, I found that the cosmoline was easy to clean up. The stock had been restained. Since I like the old government rifles, I sanded it down so that it would be smooth and a bit more original. None of the numbers on the gun match, but are all factory rebuilt. Sanded down and reoiled the stock and oiled the action to make it smoother. When I first used the action, it was really, really stiff. After some work, it was smooth. Today, first time on the range - exceptional firing, speed, and low recoil, using Remington 8mm Mauser 170 gr. soft points. Fairly accurate at 50-75 yards. Not tested at the 100/200 yard range. It's great! Would definitely buy more."

"I ordered on a Saturday, my FFL had it on the next Thursday. My rifle was definitely issued and came with a used sling, but in satisfactory condition with all matching parts. Overall, everything was operational except for the cleaning rod which was bent. Mine was a M48 all milled (not an A or B) with probably 80-90% bluing. The exposed parts were worn down to the white along edges but most of the barrel showed deep bluing. The bolt and butt plate had minor surface rust and pitting, but a good polishing would take care of that. It came in very heavy cosmoline. I have not had the chance to shoot it yet because I am still in the process of sweating out the walnut stock, but I can see that its rifling comes all of the way to the end of the barrel with a good crown. The inside of the barrel could be better. It has minor pitting but is still shiny. In summary, mine is probably an original production run M48 in issued condition, but considering the fact that these guns have been imported for over 10 years now, you never know what you will get, since I assume most of the really good unissued stuff has been picked over by now."

"Very pleased with this rifle overall. Bolt doesn't match, but I don't care. The gun will be a shooter. After a brush and some patches thru the bore, it looks brand new! Crisp lands and bright, shiny bore. The rifle is in all around excellent condition. I received the gun two days ago and haven't shot it yet, but I have no doubt it will perform well. It takes some work to get all the cosmoline removed, but it helps you get more familiar with your new gun. This is a very well made rifle and shows only slight wear marks. With plenty of life remaining, this will make an excellent deer gun! A great price for a very high quality firearm. Buy one. You won't be disappointed."
