"This product system came in a plain brown box. In it was a box contining the filter and a bag with a spigot, several washers and a cloth kind of thing, and NO instructions. I am an atypical man and like to read instructions before I start drilling holes in buckets to attach spigots of unknown diameters. I then tried to look up instructions on the internet and after a few minutes gave up. It shouldn't be this hard. And as for how well it works, I should not comment on that since I don't know if I got it together correctly or not. This why I gave it two bullets. Come on CTD, give some instructions. Please."

"I bought this and I needed instructions to put it together."

"I agree...needs some way to ensure the filter is installed properly..By the way if you buy the buckets (which are not included) get some lids as it is the only way the top bucket wont slide into the lower bucket...I assume (aqnd you know what that usually means!!!) the filter sock goes over the ceramic filter....please some advice would be helpful I realize this isnt rocketscience but hey lives could be on the line in an emergency."

"I just put my system together. Very easy and fast to do. It's nice knowing that I have a easy way to filter water that is safe to drink and cook with in an emergency. Takes up a small storage space in my trailer, I hung it from the inside ceiling from a hook."

"I give this filter 5 bullets. I have previously made my own filtration system utilizing two buckets -using natural objects to filter the water, to include grass, sand, charred lumber, and lava rock. It is my opinion that this ceramic filter makes it FAR MORE simple to cleanse your water prior to drinking. As for the exact specifications on how pure the water is -I couldn't tell you. A simple food coloring test may be performed to your satisfaction, but I can say that generally, these ceramic filters with carbon impregnation are highly functional and dependable for at least several months after initial use.I personally love this filter set (spigot and added cloth cover included) because it is simple, reliable, and saves me lots of time (and money) in the long run! For the price, you can't beat it."

"it was all to simple to put together and use. i picked up food grade buckets with lids on them at lowes. drilling the holes was simple and straight forward. this works great and is so simple a child could figure it out."

"There is nothing like this on the Market! For those that are looking for information. You can look on the Manufacture's Web site www.JustWater.me Great info and Tesimonies from humanitarians around the world. They do not sell the Filter on this site. You have to find a Distributor like Cheaper than Dirt."

"There are several websites giving instructions with photos of how to assemble this water filter.TIP: You can increase the flow of water by putting in more or by getting a LARGER ceramic gravity water filter. Ceramic water filter candles can be purchased on EBAY or other websites. THEY ARE EXPENSIVE $25 TO $50 each depending on how large they are. The larger they are, or more numerous in your top bucket, the faster they filter more water per hour."

"I ordered two units as I anticipated conducting tests to ensure that the units work. I assembled the unit and buckets without any problems. I poured in the water and all seemed to work well. I repeated the process, but this time I added blue liquid food coloring. IT DID NOT WORK!!!. The filtered water from the spigot was still blue. I checked the bucket for leaks...none. I repeated the process.. STILL BLUE. I am going to call the manufacturer. I am not sure what this means. Maybe I have a defective unit... Maybe filtering food coloring is different than filtering poison, but I am concerned. I consider this to be a no rating until I get clarity."

"Food Coloring is not an effective test, period. The filter works to filter anything ABOVE .5 Microns, that is multi-celled critters.I don't even think there would be an effective way to Measure food coloring in water, However... if you need that level of filtration, one should invest in Reverse Osmosis filtration, that can effectively remove Salt & Minerals from OCEAN Water and provide safe drinking water.I would prefer a filter that goes to .3 microns, like most Katadyn Filtration systems (I own FOUR Katadyns, 2 the same Hiker Pro, one Vario, and the Base Camp Model I bought here at CTD)I love the Vario, its the best lever pump action I have worked with, but is two large, hence the Hicker Pro's, one stays In the CAR with me at all times, the second is only a spare.I am buying this to filter City Water, as well as at my Base Camp."

"I just received, and put together this water filter.I used "two gallon" white buckets from Orange Depot. Buckets made in USA!I took the first, (bottom)bucket, and found the lowest spigot mounting level: 8.5X11 paper hits the inside bottom, mark the top, transfer that height to the outside. FOR my personal choice I was 90 degrees from the wire handle, YMMV. Using that mark as the bottom of a Flat side on the plastic nut, I scribed the hole inside the nut. Rocket Science!I used the lids 'inner circle' as the are to remove, to allow the top bucket to drip into the bottom. I held the filter in its bubble wrap, and placed it on the upside down top bucket. Scribed around its outside. To wash the filter (the ONLY thing you ~REALLY NEED~ to know)I used my Single Purpose Only sponge, from my Katadyne Base Camp gravity flow filter.USE CLEAN WATER, and just gently scrub the ceramic surface. I also filled and emptied the inner portion Several Times, for potential carbon filter particles...Folks none of this is rocket science, and for the TOTAL of under $40.00 (variables, shipping & cost of buckets) this is a great filtration system. it is not "super cool" in looks, but it will be in my kitchen, and for ""to GO" just empty water, LEAVE!I hope this helps... by the way, I have been using IN HOME water filters, since 1987, this cost Less than a replacement filter for my Multi-Pure(tm) water filter, which connects to my kitchen sink, via an ALWAYS in the way hose!I will be buying Two More now, for the future needs!!!"

"No instructions needed. The video is helpful, particularly when trying to figure out which size drill bits to use. I did not connect the lid for the clean bucket to the bottom of the filter bucket, as shown in the video. Instead I chose to drill a larger hole in the lid, so the filter drain could slip through without any problems. This way I can nestle the buckets together for storage."

"I love this filter, never thought I would have a use for a filter like this.but since the city water turned and started to smell like a lake, I decided it was time. Not only does it filter 0.5, but will take the bad smell out of water. I am veru impressed! And as CTD great customer service (the best online store I have dealt with), this order was the only one I have needed to contact customer service about. I had a prompt very helpful response!"

"Man this thing is so simple my 12 year old understands it! I am going to get 4 more so we can have a cycle of filters, and clean water if we ever have to use the swamp water."

"These filters really work well. I built the system as they suggest and added an external clear line to function as a gauge. It does filter slowly so you have to be patient. It takes about an hour to build, even with the addition I mentioned."
5.0 5
"It works great. It filters about two drops per second and the element takes a couple days to dry after use. But, this is no surprise as 0.5 micron is a tiny hole. I use this as a prefilter for the hand held Katadyn. I will get another one as a spare."

"The principal here is great. I had high hopes for this filter. With my water source which is fairly clean flowing water from a bayou it takes almost a week to filter 5 gallons of water. I do not recommend this product."

"What a great product! Simple, portable, stowable. We live 100% off grid in the Rockies plus we off-road and camp a lot out here. This system is permanently packed into our Jeep along with 2 modified 2 gallon buckets. It was pretty simple to put together, even though some reviewers seemed to have some difficulty. I love the fact that with this filtration system, I don't have to worry about water sources. I have filtered mountain stream water, water from the Rio Grande as well as ponds, creeks, etc. and am still alive and kicking to tell the tale. Order four. They are well worth the price and less than 1/3 what most ceramic systems cost."

"I initially ordered one to test out and was immediately impressed. Though this was easy to put together for me, some had some problems with no instructions. Thanks for the videos to help alleviate the seemingly only problem with this product. I have somewhat decent city water, but still wanted cleaner water for brewing and drinking. This water is so 'clean' I have used it in every one of my ales and beer making endeavors with the purest tasking brews ever. Have used water to clean boo-boo's from the kids' explorations with good faith. And a good, stiff belt of clean .5 micron filtered water in between ales really feels great for the body! Yes, it takes a while for filtration. Plan ahead survival pro's...patience pays off. Order 3 or four and have a few more for 'stock'. Next project will be using in combination with a room dehumidifier, ultraviolet light tube."

"I researched this filter and had no hesitation as every video/review etc was so positive and most filters seem to be really expensive, this one was awesome. May try camping while teaching my kids but hate to waste it."
5.0 5
"Now that CTD has posted not only instructions in a downloadable form but also put a "how to" video up how can you go wrong. The system is slow but it doesn't claim to be fast. It says 14gl a day which is pretty close to what it will do. As with any filter try and keep the moss out of it, common sense goes a long ways. Don't be afraid to get a little wet and get away from the pond scum on the shoreline before dumping it in the filter. It is cheap enough to get several units for backups or if more are needed for higher quantities of output."

"This was my first purchase from Cheaper Than Dirt. I have spent the past 6 months looking at all sorts of water filtration systems for my home and for camping type stuff and decided to try this one based on price. The water filter arrived swiftly. After assembling it and getting the air pressure to equalize well (tight fitting bucket lids) it filtered much faster than I expected and the taste and quality of the water was honestly way beyond my expectations. Thanks for an excellent product at a great price. Now I don't have to keep buying filters for my water pitcher every month."

"I have been reviewing a number of filtering systems for an upcoming project to provide clean drinking water in parts of Africa and this unit takes the prize when measured by ease of operation, effectiveness, portability and cost.If you are looking for water that is void of bacteria and protozoa, this is the unit for you. Although it does take time to produce the water through only gravity, the results can't be beat. If you are looking to filter viruses, you will have to pick up a Sawyer .02 at $145, but otherwise, the Monolithic Water filtration system from CTD is the BEST bargain for performance on a budget. If all goes well, we will by buying 100 of these units. CTD, you're the best!"

"Ordered this Ceramic filtration system, it came broken. The glue had separated from the plastic base and the ceramic top. Called CTD, no questions asked they sent me another one. It came to me perfect. Tested it on some water from the Pourtneff river (which has i-coli and nasty crap in it. Water came out sparkling clean. After two weeks no one has gotten sick. Going to buy a whole bunch of the candle type's and put 2 in each 5 gallon bucket to increase the flow. The more good water you have, the better off you are. I live in Idaho, lots of water, but you have to boil it or filter it. Thank-you CTD!"

"This product is just great. I didn't watch the video above and didn't need any instructions it's so simple to put together. I am already testing it out and it is doing perfect."

"Bought the filter and received it swiftly. Works great so far. Only problem was there was a missing washer for the spigot. Too easy of a fix. BTW, this was my first CTD purchase and I'm hooked. Thanks folks"

"Ordered this mid afternoon on a Tuesday, it was on my porch when I came home from work on Thursday. Very impressed with the short shipping time. Product arrived without damage. It was very carefully packed. Product appears to be easy to put together. Totally self explanatory. I have not used it as I have purchased it to be packed away for a future emergency. As inexpensive as it is, I could not pass on it as "Cheap Insurance"."

"This is an awesome filter for an emergency kit. A preppers must have. I will probably be buying three more to produce clean water for neighbors in an emergency. Thnx CTD"

"Bought 2 of these after seeing an article in Backwoods Home magazine. Installed in buckets as soon as it arrived and started making filtered water right away. We use it instead of the filtered water on the refrigerator and will eventually have use for it out in the country. System installed easily, although as others have noted, except there was only 1 washer with the spigot (used the washer from the second kit to finish the job). Small issue, but enough to drop the rating to 4 instead of 5 if only for the inconvenience. Will be buying at least 2 more to stock up for the future."

"Great item, received quickly and had the entire thing assembled in about 5 minutes. Don't forget you have to buy your own 5 gallon bucket(s) and lid(s). I purchased two for about $6, not bad at all. For a cheaper version of very expensive products that is still able to filter out most nasty stuff, it's worth buying a couple. No instructions included, but watch the youtube vid and you'll be up to speed in no time."

"This filter is an excellent buy (I have 2). Works as advertised and filters water (once the filter itself becomes saturated with water) faster than I had thought.I would very much like to buy at-least 2 more, but for whatever reason CTD is no longer shipping water filters to my state?!? Anyone else have this problem?"

"I have ordered many things from CTD and, as always, two day shipping and well packed items. This filter is AWESOME! It is insurance against the unknown times ahead. Highly recommended. Thanks, CTD!"

"Install was fast, thanks to the video. I am going to purchase at least 2 more. With cleaing you can get 1400 gal. of fresh water. You just can't beat that! I used 5 gal. buckets from my local hardware store and that worked fine. And as always super fast shipping."

"Great product BUT you can't use a gamma lid for the bottom bucket lid. You have to find a Flat lid,the threads are too short on the filter for the gamma lid ! I also added a pack of cheese cloth & colander to the kit for a pre-filter system while pouring water into the top bucket. This will keeper your filter cleaner longer."
2.0 5
"It does filter quite well. However while trying to get the lid back on the bottom bucket, I dropped the top bucket and filter about a foot onto my carpet, empty, and the filter broke off. Yes they say that could happen if you try to unscrew the filter without grabbing the bottom of it to unscrew. And I don't expect it to be built like a tank, but, could be that this is a product that might be used in bad situlations, where it might run into a few bumps along the way. I will continue to support and order from CTD, but certainly won't order anymore of this product. Too fragile in my opinion."

"Ordered on Sunday recieved on Wednesday, in perfect condition. Simple set up and use. I won't use it, until it's needed, it does look fragile, and will be stored and used accordingly. Never had a bad order from CTD."

"I installed this filter on two buckets I got from Home Depot (nice locking flat lids). Installation was easy and took less than 10 minutes. It makes a great addition to your "bug out" bag. I took a heavy duty, clear plastic bag to line the top bucket and use it to store addition equipment, like a solar charger, rope, first aid kit, etc."

"Bought this and it looks good. Haven't used it yet. One thing I noticed when I got this in was that if u think about it your paying $30 for this and the filters alone are only $10. So you're pretty much paying $20 for the spickit tap and a felt sock! I will be buying more filters but if I had to do it again I would have just bought a tap from home depo for a few bucks and saved an extra $20."

"This filter is a must have for any situation. It can make potable water for 8 months and while its carbon will not be useful after this time, if you take good care and prefilter your water. The ceramic filter will last indefinitely if proper care is taken in a survival situation so please add this to your preps."

"I bought five of these for myself and my kids for Christmas presents. I just got around to putting together the system. I used two food grade buckets and gamma lids from Baytec Containers, however, as they are close to where I live. I drilled out the bottom lid to accept the filter output stem, but I didn't fasten the filter to it. That lets me make five gallons of water and use an undrilled gamma lid to close the lower container for storage. BTW, make a vent hole somewhere in your lower container. I just drilled a 1/4 inch in one of the webs on the gamma lid. If you don't, the system will become air-bound. The water is great and the coffee tastes the best. I get pretty close to the output in the specs with the vent. I highly recommend and I will buy a few more."

"I was impressed by how quick CTD got the item to me. I feel everyone should have a way to get drinking water in an emergency situation and having one of these on hand will help keep you out of a line somewhere, waiting for someone else to take care of something you should have. This works on even pond or rain water. It is fragile but if care is taken, will provide plenty of clean water for you and your family. Again, thank you CTD for the quick service."

"This does what it says, I think. I don't understand a lot of the terminology of what it claims. HOWEVER, I took some water from the roof (rain water caught in a 55 gallon drum) and another sample from a local stream (clear water stream). I then sent unfiltered samples and filtered samples for testing. The smell of ditch water was gone but the testing lab told me not to drink the water. Both filter samples had very high levels of e coli and other nasties that will make one very sick. Their suggestion is after filtering, boil the water for 3 minutes, then it could be consumed."

"I have been using this filter for some time and in several countries and have not had any problems with the filter or with bad water. I just got back from Africa and the group I was with used it and none of us got sick. I have also used the filter in Haiti, Mexico, and Brazil and have never had any kind of medical issues because of bad water. Check out the companys web site and their lab reports. The filter does what it is supposed to do - filter out the bacteria. I cant believe the fast delivery service that Cheaper Then Dirt has. Good job."

"CTD staff is AWESOME and I have nothing but good things to say about them. The filter, however, is very delicate. The first one arrived broken and there was charcoal everywhere. I contacted customer service and they sent me a new one immediately, no questions asked. I received this yesterday and this time it is intact. This would be a much better product if there were some way to make it more durable. In an emergency situation, where things can't be delivered, it won't be like you can just order another one when the SHTF. There is a good video to watch on the site to help you with assembly and some good tips by other reviewers. My great experience with customer service will keep me coming back and ordering other things."

"I've used this filter for several years now in third world country situations. I have found it to be an excellent source for producing clean water for small groups of people. It is my understanding that this filter is being used in many foreign countries right now. I personally have used it in Jamaica, Dominican Republic, and Brazil with humanitarian service groups. The first time I used the filter was in Jamaica, as a typical two 5 gallon bucket gravity flow drip system. It provided drinking water for 22 people for a week. No one got sick on the trip, except for one couple that admitted to brushing their teeth with local water. The written reports look impressive, even though I may not fully understand the terminology. I am here to tell you from a personal stand point that I feel safe filtering any water with this product. Ingesting water born bacteria can be a painful and long lasting experience. Unless you are 100% sure the water you are drinking is safe, I would recommend that you have this filter system on hand for those types of situations. Thank you for making this available to the public!"

"Put together a double bucket system. Filled top with untested backyard shallow well water that was cloudy with suspended particles. Added 1T bleach to top bucket, although I should have used 1/2t in the filtered bottom (5 gallons filtered). This is S L O W ! Slow! I had to wait 24 hours before I had 5 gallons. This would be considered slow, right? Certainly not enough to drink or cook with after 8 hours that's for sure. Could there be something wrong? The white "filter sock" doesn't stays on, will float off under water, so, that was useless. Water was clear as day, no smell, nothing. Tasted BETTER than bottled water, I'm serious. Drank it ice cold, and it had no flat taste, no odd anything. It's just SLOW. I may add 4 to the bottom to speed things up."

"I ordered on a Tuesday and received the items on a Thursday with standard ground shipping. Assembly was so simple a child could do it. It takes very little time to actually filter five gallons of water. I generally fill it at night before bed and have five gallons of filtered water by morning. The filtered water tastes better than bottled water and far better than tap water. The system is completely portable and I would feel safe using these in an emergency or survival situation."

"I got one of these originally for our disatster kit. We tried it out and it works wonderfully. Then we found reasons to keep a system on the kitchen counter. We have well water - lots of minerals and a little 'earthy" smell and taste. The water out of this system is clear, no smell no taste (that's WITH a filter and softener already). BUT we found that it removed the high amount of calcium we have, along with some iron oxide. We put the water in a decorative fountain - and no "white" residue!, it's in the coffee maker - no more cleaning the lines and valves!, we put in in the cats fountains and reduced thier chances of getting FUS by a huge margin (vet's opinion). HINTS: put a vent (paint spray nozzel with white part pulled out)in the lower bucket. Cut a hole in the top bucket and cover with a lid for easy filling (I used a plastic cup with a lid, cut off). Use a flashlight to check levels. Use a "scale" on the buckets to prevent overfilling (bottom one going down, top one going up). Remove the handle from the upper bucket so that it's picked up by the lower bucket only. BUY MORE - when things go south - these are a gold mine."

"I bought this about a year ago wanter to save it for when tshtf but started using it from the kitchen sink, the water tastes great better then buying water bottles but now bought a second filter system for the coming shtf I want to be ready with fresh water...you cant go wrong with this filter I put small pieces of masking tape all over the buckets to hide them then took brown shoe polish it looks kind of like wood covering the buckets...you can always paint them or leave the buckets alone"

"This came quickly, with printed instructions including the drill bit sizes needed for this (1/16, 3/4, 5/8). I don't (yet) have a water test kit but the difference in the water quality is amazing. When it's time to deal with emergency water situation I'll be ready. In the meantime I'll be enjoying the health benefits of near-pure water on a daily basis. Coffee, tea? Pure bliss. Living in Houston offers many opportunities for water collection as the storms roll through! Also outages :P"
