The Barnaul Machine Plant JSC is one of the leading producers of industrial goods and ammunition in Russia. The plant's history goes far in the past to the period of Alexander I. The Emperor ordered the opening of the first cartridge plants in St. Petersburg in 1869. During World War I the plant supplied the Russian Army and operated out of St. Petersburg, During World War II, the plant was relocated to Barnaul, where production of various types of cartridges began.

"I bought 5 boxes of this ammo and shot all of them and had no problems at all well other then it making your finger trun Yellow from loading the clips it shoots fine not drity and straight I would have given it 5 bullets but it took me awhile to get the yellow off my fingers. I will buy it again but wear gloves next time."

"Yeah no brass casings and yes it has a coating on it that makes your fingers yellow.. but given what's taking place today.. who cares? You squeeze the trigger and it goes bang and shoots good enough groupings. The price is like Wally World and you don't have to waste all that gas driving all over heck for a few boxes. I'm glad to pay the shipping. I'd buy a couple of cases if I had the dough and be done with it.. with all the saving.. pick up an extra can of Rem Oil for cleaning time."

"Bought 200 rounds last week. Took them to the range today. Good groupings when shooting, gun was not dirtier than other rounds. Hands were dirty (yellow/green tiny). Not a problem, washes off easy. I would definitely buy more."

"I have bought 500 rounds of this and shot it through my Glock 17 and my Beretta 92. It hung up about once every 30 rounds in the Beretta but didn't hang up once in my Glock. I will definitly order more of this ammo. Keep in mind that this ammo is dirty but is a lot better quality then wolf ammo."

"I ordered 5 boxes of this 9mm ammo. I went to the range today and shot 100 rounds without a problem. I think it's a no-brainer considering the price to buy this stuff. It's just as clean as anything else I've shot and we should all clean our guns after each outing anyway.....This is a great deal, I'll be ordering more."

"I bought a box of this ammo for requalification. My Browning Hi power \"practical \" pistol loves it ! Smooth ,accurate, and not very dirty! Also the holes in the target were clean sharp edges. I've had some ammo (Wolf .45) that had ragged holes ,the bullet appeared to be tumbling thru the paper."

"I bought 3 boxs (150) rounds. The yellow coating does turn your fingers yellow. I have a Smith & Wesson SW99. The box I shot worked fine. No jams. groups were more scattered than other ammos. My wife shot them. Every shot jammed. I was thinking she was doing something wrong so we changed to Winchester ammo from Wal-Mart. Every shot she made worked fine. Maybe the lesser power ammo couldn't cycle the gun with her grip. The ammo is bad dirty. After most the way though 3 boxes smoke was even coming from the barrel. Took 2 cleanings on the gun. First to get the residue off. Gun still stank so had to clean it again. Never had to do that before. Its not for me."

"I ordered a few boxes for my various 9mm pistols and my Beretta CX4 Rifle. Shot just fine at the range without problems. It is a bit dirty and smells awful after several rounds. Keep your weapon clean after use and this stuff is just great! Thanks CTD!"

"I put 2 boxes through my S&W 9VE last week. My gun was dirty and the ammo cycled without fail. Actually, the kid on the lane next to me had these in 9mm makarov, he didn't have any issues to mention either. It's accurate and not as dirty as some make it seem. They're no dirtier than Blazers. The lacquer did turn a few of my fingertips green, but it washes off. I'll buy more when I see them."

"Fired 150 rounds at the range today in XD9 Sub and S&W 908 and had three misfires. It will give you a chance to work on your misfire procedure. Not the cleanest burning and smelled different than most other ammo. The coating will leave your hand dirty from loading but that's not a big deal. If you're looking for a really cheap range ammo, give it a try."

"This ammunition is the CHEAPEST I have found short of stealing it! And yes it does make your fingers yellow, but if you are afraid of getting your fingers dirty, here is a piece of advice; GO BUY SOME SOAP AND STOP COMPLAINING! Out of 250 rounds, I experienced 3 misfires, which is pretty good considering each round cost. For the price, no one can beat it!"
– LUGINATOR

"I have used this for the past year, and just picked up 40 more boxes. The price cannot be beat. The ammunition is a little dirtier than most, and my Glock needs more cleaning than usual, but I have never had a misfire or a dud. I am shooting with a Glock 35, and an adaptor barrel for 9 mm. If it works great here, then it will work great anywhere."

"This is by far the best 9mm ammo due to the price! Now there is better quality out there, but for this price? NO! I've shot about 2000 rounds through my P99 with no problems at all. I've been waiting for them to have this in stock again, and they finally able to order it. I bought 63 boxes! It's well worth it LOL's!"

"I got 500 rounds for my Glock 19 & my Kel-Tec P-11, which loved this stuff. The only thing I noticed different from my normal ammo was the smell of the burnt powder. Other than that this stuff worked great. I just ordered another 1000 rounds."

"This the cheapest Russian made ammo I had found. Ordered 1,000 rounds and had a 100% fired rate from both my XDM 3.8 and CZ duty. Yes, my fingers covered with yellow powder after the first 50 rounds. Gloves are required, since it is kind hard to wash it off."

"This stuff works great not too dirty and really cheap. Just about a perfect practice round. Now if CTD can get more I will be ordering again. Used them in Ruger P95, Kel-tec P11, and a Kel-tec Sub-2000. Not even one hic-cup from any of the guns."

"I was a skeptic at first. I mean how could ammo costing this much be any good when just 3 months ago, I was buying 9mm ammo for double the price. WOW! Just shot my first box today, and shot it with my S&W 9VE. It shot perfectly. I didn't notice the odor being any worse than any other Russian ammo. I have shot Wolf SKS ammo, and it isn't any worse. No jams, no stove pipes, and no accuracy issues. As a matter of fact, my friend's 14 year old daughter shot for the first time and got on paper @ 100 yards! WOW! Going to buy 20 baxes as soon as I get done typing this!"

"The recent spike in the cost of ammo pushed me to give this a try. I bought five boxes awhile back and finally went to the range. Other than the smell produced when firing this stuff, I don't have any problems with it.I ran this stuff through a S&W 5906; it handles everything. There were no misfeeds or failures to fire. I can't say the ammo was dirtier than other brands I've used before; it was not dirtier than Winchester white box. I will probably buy again; however when possible I will choose another brand because I don't like the smell of this stuff."

"I dont know how they shoot yet, but i got to say that they came in very fast! I orderd them yesterday at 1:08pm and got them today at 1:22pm. That's very fast, I didn't pay for overnight mail ether. I did the regular 3-5 day mail."

"I shot 100 rounds of the Brown Bear at the range yesterday and had zero problems out of my Glock 19. As mentioned by others, it has a funny smell, turns your fingers green and sends a puff of smoke downrange with every shot. Regardless, I found the accuracy to be comparable to the American Eagle FMJ's I usually use for practice. There must be some (near) slave-labor involved to get them at this price, but as the purchasing power of the dollar continues it's annual 5-6% decline I have a feeling more and more folks will be switching to cheap foreign ammo..."

"I have been firing Brown Bear and Silver Bear for a while now, and I have had zero problems with this company. After firing off thousands of both rifle and pistol rounds. Just got back from the range today fired off 550 rounds of this stuff in my Glock 17, and had no problems other than two feeding problems due to my cheap KCI mags I was using. I used Glock mags the majority of the time and had no problems. Excellent product will be buying more."

"I guess for the price you could say it was worth all the hassel. I won't say that! This ammo is terrible, dirty and very unreliable. I bought 100 rounds, and had six (6) duds in the first three full mags on my Colt Combat Commander. Then to top it off, had a dud that got jammed in the barrel and was done shooting for the day. Seriously, don't waste your money!"
– Tom S.

"Lets be honest how much can you expect for the price...apparently a lot! I have fired over 3000 rounds of Brown Bear and only had one dud! For all the money I have saved easily worth the two seconds it took to rack the charge and load the next round. Accurate as any other rounds I have fired also. You can't beat this deal with a stick! Buy, Buy, Buy!"

"I bought a case of 9mm Brown Bear and have shot more than 600 rounds with my XD9 without any problems. I'm going to buy another case. I have also shot at least 2000 rounds of Brown Bear .223 in 55 and 62 grain through my Bushmaster. I have had no problems, (No FTE or FTF) with this ammo at all. It has been just as reliable as the more expensive brands."

"Ordered 3 boxes just for a test run. Shot about 100 rounds +/- with no problems whatsoever. Shot just fine out of my XDM, and my buddy's PPS. Even put a couple rounds through my old Jennings nine without any problems (from the ammo, anyway.) Seemed as accurate as any other ammo I've shot thus far. Did leave my fingers a little green, and it did have a strong stench as others have mentioned. Still, not enough of an issue to keep me from buying again."

"I read the 35 previous reviews and decided to try the Brown Bear in spite of the complaints of \"yellow dust\", \"Need gloves\", \"dirty\", \"smoky\", and others. When they arrived, I decided to mix the Brown Bear in with Winchester and FMC. I shot approx. 100 rounds of Brown Bear this way. I thought that if there were a big difference, then it would be obvious when I unknowingly shot the Brown Bear. My conclusion is that I was not aware of any difference in these three ammo brands. I conclude that it is equivalent to the PMC and Winchester in smoke, odor and accuracy, and handling. I did not use gloves when I loaded the magazine, and I had no yellow residue on my hands. At the price, one can not go wrong."

"I literally run thousands of rounds of this stuff through my SWD M11. I'm running a Lage Max-11 upper. Never has this ammo been a problem. I've had brass case stuff, but this is good stuff too. I hope it sets the bar in price for all the overpriced brass stuff."

"Ammo fires every single time through my Ruger SR9. No problems, no malfunctions, no duds out of 250 rounds. Definitely smells dirty, and definitely makes the gun dirty. I've also fired it through an XDM9 and Glock 17 with no problems. HK P30 FTE'd every 2 or 3 rounds with it, but fired Blazer Brass without fail. All in all, It's cheap and it fires, but I've decided to only put brass through my gun for the sake of being a good steward. Steel can be hazardous to your gun which is why I rated these babies 4/5 bullets. Buy brass!"

"I have bought several thousand rounds of this ammo from CTD and have fired it in my Model 19 and my wife in her Model 17. I have used them in IPSC matches and have never had a misfire, hangup or any kind of misfire. This past weekend while practicing for a match we shot 500 rounds and my 19 got a bit sluggish in fully chambering a round unless I gave it a good snap when I racked it.This pistol had not been cleaned in over 700 rounds so I expected something like this. If you don't buy this ammo for a least practice ammo you are leaving money on the table."

"I bought 6 boxes of this stuff, ran to my local indoor range, and they wouldn\uFFFDt let me shoot it. Due to it being a steel bullet he used a magnet and said \uFFFDSorry can\uFFFDt shoot it.\uFFFD I went to an indoor basement range and had no problem. I did shoot through 3 boxes without a problem. BUT just a heads up, some ranges won\uFFFDt let you shoot IN NY on long island because the bullet itself, not the casing is steel!! I still had NO problems with it in my gun and after 150 rounds or so, when I went to clean my XD-9 SC, it seemed not as dirty as usual when I fire my Winchester or American Eagle."

"I fired over 1000 rounds of this through Glock 17, Walther 99, CZ 75b and Taurus PT99, not a single miss fire. I just don't know why some people had so much trouble. This ammo is not ideal for pointed target, but a good practice for control pair."

"Only fired 50 rounds but didn't have any duds or loading issues in my XD-9. This is a cheap ammo, but after comparing this to the Tula and HTM, I prefer both of those over the Brown Bear. These are consistently less accurate than the other two, and considering the steel casing, I think I'll go with HTM for my bulk cheap ammo."

"I've been shooting this ammo for a while now and love it! Cheaper than dirt! I could care less about reloading, so the steel case isn't an issue for me. This ammo is accurate. Some say it's dirty, they all get dirty if you shoot a lot of rounds. I clean my weapon after every session at the range, no matter how many shots fired. I wish it were American made, but for the money, you can't beat it."

"Like many others, I had my doubt about this ammo. This doubt was erased upon arriving at the range. After 3 boxes (150 rounds), this ammo proved to be reliable (feeding and ejecting), accurate, and as clean (or dirty) as any federal, WWB, or UMC that I shoot. Pistol used was a Kahr P9. Great value ammo for plinking and great delivery time."

"I purchased 750 rounds of Brown Bear in 9mm for the range. The only complaint (other than it is pretty dirty) is the lacquered cases do not want to feed in a double stacked mag. I was running it through an XDm 9mm had 4 fail to feeds in 200 rounds. Biggest pain was loading the mags. Even with a mag loaded the rounds would hang up when loading, hold down the spring, and the top round would fall out. Would have to bang the mag on something to get the spring freed up to feed the rounds.I may try the Silver Bear next time...or spend a little more on something else...had high hopes for this ammo"

"I'm not usually a fan of steel cased ammo, but this ammo performed exceptionally well and my Glock 19 eats anything. I fired 50 yesterday and had pretty good results. I had a few that weren't greatly accurate that I can usually keep in the center of mass. Maybe I just had a few bad shots, maybe not. Either way, this ammo was awesome, especially after I had a bad batch of WWB last week. I will definitely be buying more. Next day shipping: thanks CTD!"

"I ran a box of this through my Beretta 92FS without a misfire or a misfeed. Just be aware that the bullet is steel and some indoor ranges prohibit steel bullets. "When the local Mart was out of Federal, I decided to try these. Bought 400 rounds to get the price, incl. shipping, just below what I usually pay. I sent 200 rounds through my SR9 yesterday and all I can say is, I wish I'd have ordered more. While I had a few isolated rounds which were a little smokey, I didn't have any performance issues at all and accuracy was excellent. I was shooting outside; taking 50 yard shoots with wind gusts of over 20 mph as well as short range rapid fire (steel challenge)."

"I have put around 300 rounds of this ammo through my Hi-Point 995. The ammo is very dirty, and have had about 3 FTF out of the ammo I have shot so far. I give it 5 bullets because this is exactly what you can expect to get out of 8 dollar box of ammo. I would never trust my life to this ammo but if you are looking for inexpensive range ammo this is the way to go."

"What more can I say beyond the title? I fired over 300 rounds of this ammo through my Hi-Point C9 without any problems. It cycled and fired as expected. Sure, it's stinky. For some reason Russian ammo always smells funny, but it works. I've been happy with both Cheaper Than Dirt and Brown Bear for both this 9mm, and the 7.62x39 ammo through my SKS. When it's in stock, buy it."

"I went out on a limb and bought 350 rds. I just went out and went through 200 of them. Not a single rnd miss-fired or jammed. I own a P89 and a springfeild 9mm. I'm big on good ammo and this ammo beats any other not just because it's cheap, but because the casing is laquered which helps if you handle your ammo and don't fire right away. Unlike the solid brass casing which tarnishes after you touch it. I'm sticking to Brown Bear. No questions asked. Hands down."

"I have had some bad experiences with this and Tula 9mm Steel Cased. I have experienced a couple of jams in my Taurus 24/7 with this ammo. One of the jams was particularly bad, with the casing not extracting and getting stuck real real bad in the chamber. Also, I have made this mistake...a couple of times. STORE IN A DRY ENVIRONMENT. NO JOKE! I have ruined a couple boxes of this stuff by putting it in my car trunk for a week or so. Even though the ammo itself was not wet, a wet raincoat or something evaporated and the stuff corroded very quickly in the moist environment. This....(along with my stupidity) led to me loading the corroded ammo, and my kel tec pf9 blew up in my hand. Yes...I am not joking, the barrel seared apart and my pf9 went from 13 ounces to probably 9. OK, so thats the bad. That said, the ammo is very cheap, and it DOES seem to have decent velocity. The kick is pretty significant, I think it is much more powerful than some of the cheaper PMC, CCI kind of stuff. Bottom Line. I WOULD try this ammo out IF I was just shooting outside, or on a range that allows steel ammo(my local ones do not). Just keep it dry and see if your pistol accepts the rounds. This would be be a good practice round, it is cheap and has good performance. BUT, I don't think I would carry it, as I'm pretty sure the rounds might corrode by moisture in ones clothing. I live in Seattle, but I suspect that in the South it would be a risk to leave the ammo outside in the humid air. Hope this review helps. 3/5 stars. -Leif"

"Well I went through a box of these at the range and they all fired and only every 3 or 4 jammed, I guess that is expected for the price. If you don't mind needing to rack your pistol every other shot this is the ammo for you. Not a devistating issue when I'm shooting a paper target but might be a different story if the target shot back. I have 5 more boxes to change my mind but not holding my breath."

"I bought 20 boxes of this ammo to feed my Glock 19 Gen 4 on X-mas day since I didn't have a single hang up and it was so cheap, didn't hear from CTD about the ETA of the new orders coming in, but that was fine since I was in no rush. What bothered me is that CTD decided to cancel my backorder 3 days prior to restocking this item for the general public. I'll be repurchasing my 1000 rounds, but only because of the good quality ammo for the cheap price."

"I shot 100 rounds through my Camp 9 Carbine rapid fire at the range, no jams, failures to report. I ended up with two 50 shot \"groups\" of about 4-5 inches at 25 yards, reasonable accuracy for this type of shooting. I was happy with the price of the ammo, and the service I got from CTD. Downside of this ammo was the bad smell. Surprisingly, it shoots cleaner than Winchester white box. I was amazed by that. The only real quibble I have is the nasty smell that emerges from the weapon while shooting. I can live with that as this ammo is for fun, not any serious purpose. I've heard that some Russian ammo is corrosive, so I ran boiling water down the barrel, magazines, and trigger group prior to a good scrubbing with Hoppes and CLP. I would buy this again."

"The sense of humor these guys have! I was quick to place another order of 1000 rnds when CTD restocked. When it came it came in a box labled \"Emersons Chocolate\"! ahh gotta love it considering the fact Valintines day is 6 days away. I'll continue to place my 1000 rnd order every 3 to 5 mos. Thanks CTD. Never anything bad to say about this ammo. It's accurate, affordable, and the boxes are small so that means I have moreroom in my ammo safe. SGT. Wittmann"

"This Brown Bear is the cheapest and most consistent 9mm practice ammo I have ever shot! Seems like it is liaded a little hotter than american ammo (Federal, CCI, etc) And is especially reliable in any handguns needing a powerful round to cycle! I will always keep in my stash!"

"I've run a hundred rounds or so through my Springfield Xdm 9mm and haven't had any problems with it. Upon inspection of the action of the gun (this is steel cased after all) it doesn't look like it's doing any damage, but I've only fired 100 rounds so we'll have to wait and see. Thus far, it's definitely 5 bullets and was the cheapest ammo available when I purchased."

"Ammo worked fine with the 10 round clip that came with the Hi-Point 995TS Rifle but when using the 15 round after-market magazine(Pro-Mag)the gun kept jamming on a consistent basis; 4 jams out of 15 rounds is not good. Perhaps there is a trick someone can enlighten me with to stop this affordable ammo from jamming?"

"Good, mostly reliable ammo. I had a few hard primers that required a second strike (or being fired from a different gun) to work, but other than that, no problems. The propellant is a little smellier than that used in American ammo, but isn't terrible. I only wish more ranges would let me shoot steel-jacketed, steel-cased ammo."

"I gave this ammo 4 bullets becauseof the price. Fired these through a brand new out of the box Taurus 809 9mm and had a few second fire situations. The 809 has the strike 2. Could be the gun just needed a little break in time. Shot 200 rounds or so and it did preform better after about an hour at the range. Will buy these agin but would not use for your carry ammo, or at least I wouldn't."

"I have been using this ammo for a long time and I have always been satisfied with Brown Bear peformance.I use it mainly in my KEL-TEC SUB 2000 carbine, GLOCK 17 format.I have tried to use several other brands of ammo, one being of Russian manufacturing and several American Made products. I was dealing with constant failure to feed, fire and eject situations. The Brown Bear 9mm out performs all of these other some what affordable brands of ammo I have tried hands down.Brown Bear 9mm feeds, ejects and fires with every trigger pull. What is best of all, it is affordable to use in a carbine that can eat a whole lot of ammo in a day at the range or out in the woods."

"I have a brand-spanking-new Beretta 92FS and I'm a big internet research junkie when it comes to something I'm interested in. So, I did a ton of research on what type of ammo the 92FS loves. I found nothing but great reviews running this ammo through it and I had the same results. You can bet when this ammo comes back into stock I'll be buying 2,000 rounds! To ensure I wouldn't have any cycling issues, and to put in place a good preventive maintenance program, I disassembled the pistol and used Slip2000 carbon killer to remove any factory oil or grease from the pistol and then applied Slip2000 EWL on just about every surface. This ammo cycled perfectly every time without a flaw. I highly recommend this ammunition to anyone running a 92FS. I've also read great reviews with people running Glocks, Sigs, and S&Ws. Two thumbs up!"

"I like this stuff for practice. Inexpensive and it is shippable to my part of Kalifornia. However, it has Berdan primers, which are harder to reload than normal casings if that is of importance to you. Other than that, you will need to clean after every shoot, as noted by others. Hey, that's what we all do anyways, isn't it? :-)"

"I got 150 rounds and shot 100 rounds at one shooting. This ammo produces a little extra smoke and is a little dirtier than federal. The key too it is it is mainly for shooting at a range not for defense and you need to clean your gun anyways so the extra powder is not going to hurt you and it doesn't produce that much more than federal does. I ran this ammo through my G26 and would do it again."
