WWI (yes, WWI) Original Hungarian Trench Shovel
This is a true collectors piece; the original military shovel used during WWI by the Austor-Hungarian military. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, by Yugoslav nationalist Gavrilo Princip in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914 set off a diplomatic crisis when Austria-Hungary delivered an ultimatum to the Kingdom of Serbia.July 28, 1914 Austor-Hungary declared war on Serbia.
This shovel was used extensively by the Austria-Hungarian military to dig trenches, dig latrines, and assist in digging out stuck vehicles.
The original wooden handles are 11" long, the 7.5x6.5" steel spade is secured to the wooden handle with two rivets and the back of the spade is welded to the front of the spade.
Some of the shovels have the initials of the military member that used them scratched into them. This shovel is truly a collector's item in original used condition; wooden handles have worn marks and the spade has rust and scratched off paint. Our picture is representative of what this antique piece of history looks like.
