One of the best uses for the .22 LR is training youngsters to shoot. The cartridge offers a mild report, is inexpensive, and is plentiful at present, and its accuracy with the right load is excellent. Any ammunition may be used for this pastime or for training. Most often, the most inexpensive ammunition is used. This is OK as far as it goes. However, when you are firing at targets and attempting to shoot to the best of your ability, you will value accuracy more.
If you have ever used the 6.5x55mm Swede, you know it is a game killer—out of proportion to its size. The 6.5 Creedmoor is even better in the modern rifles it is chambered in. As a varmint caliber, the 6.5 Creedmoor offers excellent utility. It offers longer range than the .223s and greater bullet mass. With Hornady TAP loads, it is also a fine tactical load, splitting the difference between the .223 and .308.
The Shooter’s Log is often asked about the ‘best’ handgun load. Unfortunately, many correspondents fail to share the intended mission of the load. The mission has a strong influence as to the desired bullet weight, velocity, and penetration. As an example, you may be perfectly happy to run the .44 Special or .45 Colt with a 255-grain SWC at 700 fps for cowboy action or target practice. If hiking in country in which the big cats or bears may be more than a nuisance, the same bullet up to 1,000 fps would be a better choice.
As far as handling and ergonomics, the AR-15 and AR-10 are brilliantly designed and function the same. Some new shooters may not realize that the AR-10 7.62x51mm rifle actually came first. In fact the AR-10 .308 rifle competed with the FN FAL and M14. In the end, the rifle was downsized into the .223 caliber AR-15, which was a response to the AK-47, but that is history and we are dealing with differences in application today.
I am asked about rifles scopes and red dot sights often. Which one should I buy, is just under who should I marry in the overall importance, and very hard to answer for another person. When you add that the student doesn’t know exactly what they are going to do with the rifle scope, the answer is even more elusive. The bottom line is the budget.
When it comes to rifle shooting, fast hits are what counts in hunting and personal defense scenarios. When sighting in the rifle from the benchrest, we have all of the time in the world. In the field, the action is fast and the stakes are at their highest. by taking advantage of cover and terrain, you can increase stability and accuracy.
Continuing his efforts to increase access to public lands, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke recently announced a proposal to open more than 248,000 acres to new or expanded hunting and fishing opportunities at 30 national wildlife refuges—Just in time for Summer!
Wouldn’t it be wonderful to could hunt all year long and not worry about time constraints? Seeing equipment sitting in the gun safe or on the garage shelves is frustrating, not to mention the pressure from short deer hunting seasons and the long period in between when skills deteriorate and time spent afield is simply lost. It has been said before, but if you have not taken up predator hunting, you are losing out.
