The previous customer review noted "The locking piece for the Vertical adjustment...hits the gears." This is false. After buying this product and assembling it, I found the piece he's talking about. The vertical support, on which the forearm of the rifle rests, is held up by a metal plate. That plate acts as a tension spring. Yes, when shipped, this metal plate rests along the gear teeth of the arm. However, according to page 4 of the instruction manual, "...rotate the tension spring into a vertical position as shown in the photo. The spring must rest in the center slot and between the teeth on either side of the ram." That solves the problem the previous reviewer was talking about. There are no problems with the design of the vertical adjustment mechanism; just make sure you read the manual! As for the performance of the item, it works properly, and yes, you can use both a rifle and a handgun with it. It is light weight, so for serious, long-term bench shooting, a heavier rest would be better. But, for the purpose of using it to zero your sights, it works great.

OK, so I wanted to write a review for this because it looks really good in the picture and I took a chance on ordering it. I am pleased with this rest. There is ONE thing I have to say and warn about. The locking piece for the Vertical adjustment is crap. you cannot adjust it vertically because the locking mechanism hits the gears. To fix this however, I just took the metal piece off and used the screw post to lock it into position and haven't had a problem. It's very nice otherwise, just a minor/fixable flaw. Still would recommend it though.
