Black Serrated Shallot Knife -
The Kershaw Shallot series offers a longer 4-3/8" handle made of 410 steel with Tungsten DLC black coating and a 3-1/2" blade. Built with the latest SpeedSafe manual assisted technology, this knife's blade is built for multi tasking and top performance. The Sandvik 13C26 stainless steel contributes high durability and edge retention. Choose between serrated or smooth edge.

Sandvik 13C26 -
Made of martensitic stainless chromium steel. After heat treatment the steel grade is characterized by high hardness, good corrosion resistance, and very good wear resistance. It is used mainly for razor blades, but is also the standard grade for surgical knives and for different types of industrial knives for the food industry.

410 Stainless Steel -
Grade 410 is the basic martensitic stainless steel; like most non stainless steels it can be hardened by a "quench and temper" heat treatment. It contains a minimum of 11.5 per cent chromium. It achieves maximum corrosion resistance when it has been hardened and tempered and then polished. Grade 410 is a general purpose grade often supplied in the hardened, but still machinable condition, for applications where high strength and moderate heat and corrosion resistance are required.

Serrated Blade -
A serrated blade has a cutting edge that has many small points of contact with the material being cut. By having less contact area than a smooth blade, the applied force at each point of contact is relatively greater and the points of contact are at a sharper angle to the material being cut.

Ambidextrous -
Described as able to use both the right and left hands with equal dexterity. Person is both, right and left handed.

Frame Lock -
Also known as the Integral Lock or Monolock. The Frame Lock is a locking mechanism invented by custom knife maker Chris Reeve for the Sebenzas an update to the liner lock. The Frame Lock works in a manner similar to the liner lock but uses a partial cutout of the actual knife handle, rather than a separate liner inside the handle to hold the blade in place. What is SpeedSafe?
SpeedSafe is a patented system that assists the user to smoothly open any SpeedSafe knife with a manual push on the blade's thumb stud or pull back on the blade protrusion. SpeedSafe is built into many of Kershaw's best-selling knives.

How does SpeedSafe work?
The heart of SpeedSafe is its torsion bar. Closed, the torsion bar helps keep the knife closed, preventing it from being opened by "gravity." In order to open the knife, the user must apply manual pressure to the thumb stud or blade protrusion to overcome the resistance of the torsion bar. After the blade is out of the handle, the torsion bar moves along its half-moon track and takes over. The blade opens smoothly and locks into position, ready for use.

How safe is SpeedSafe?
Very, SpeedSafe opens ONLY when the user manually deploys it using either the thumb stud or blade protrusion. Once deployed, a locking system secures the blade in position so that it cannot close accidentally. When releasing the lock, the blade does not snap shut due to resistance provided by the torsion bar. This bar also provides a bias towards the closed position, which holds the blade securely closed. New SpeedSafeĀ® users can ensure safe use of the technology by practicing to proficiency.

5.0 Rating The best pocket knife ever - 4/12/2010
Reviewer: Happy owner
This knife is probably the best pocket knife ot there on the market. It's really easy to open and grip one handed. It's blade is large enough to cut everyday items (I've also used it to gut deer) yet small enough to easily to fit in your pocket. The blade stays sharp FOREVER and is sharp enough to shave with when you get it (it's a little rough though). The only downside is that there are no thumb studs.

5.0 Rating 3rd Kershaw - 4/26/2011
Reviewer: Bill
This is my third Kershaw and the Shallot is my favorite. The first two have maintained their razor sharp edge for years and I expect this one will do the same. For the money Kershaws are the best knives out there.
