Four Stone Tri-Angle Sharpmaker Set -
The Tri-Angle Sharpmaker (204MF) includes two sets of high alumina ceramic stones: A pair of medium grit (brown) stones for aggressive sharpening and a set of fine (white) stones for professional grade finishing. The stones are triangular for sharpening Plainedges on the flat sides and SpyderEdges (serrations) on the corners. A furrow running the length of each stone lets you sharpen pointed items like fishhooks, darts and awls. Included is a set of brass safety rods protecting the users hands while sharpening. All components snap into the self contained ABS plastic base and lid, ready to travel with you. Die cut into the base are keyed slots and holes fitted for the stones. They accurately set the stone's sharpening angle at a 30 degree (15 degree each side) or 40 degree (20 degree each side) for knives and a 12.5 degree scissor setting. Turn the base over, a channel lets you lay two stones side by side (flat side up) for use as a bench stone. The lid snaps halfway over the base creating a handhold for stability while you're sharpening. Included is a set of brass safety rods to protect the users' hands while sharpening. Ceramic stones, like glass, will break if dropped, handle carefully. Use them dry, without oil, water or lubricants. To clean: scrub stones with a plastic scouring pad and powered abrasive cleaner, let air dry. It is also autoclave safe. System comes with instruction book and DVD.

5.0 Rating Excellent Sharpening System - 12/6/2009Four Stone Tri-Angle Sharpmaker Set Medium and Fine Grit Storage Box and Instruction Video5.0000

First, get the extra diamond rods to speed material removal. Second, be PATIENT--it takes a long time and hundreds, if not thousands, of strokes to attain the desired edge. Third, remember not to push to hard and clean the stones as they fill with material. Finally, I have better luck relying on the corners of the rods for my strokes--rather than trying to maintain contact over the whole surface on the flats. Much to my wife's irritation, I spent many hours sharpening a Western Bowie knife with a 9-1/2" blade which is now the sharpest knife I've ever held (it'll slice through skin given half a chance--like when I lightly test the edge!).

I am a knife collector primarily. Most of the knife forums gave it a good review. I bought one and it is a easy device to learn to use. With the DVD and manual that came with it I find it hard to believe anyone would have a problem learning to use it. It also sharpens fish hooks dikes, serrated edges, etc. Take the time to learn to use it, I believe you wont be sorry.

This will remove metal as advertised but will not get you the razor edge you are looking for, a 40 degree angle can't do that. It reminds me of when the owner of Buck knives died and the company changed their edge to a much tighter tolerance to give their customers the edge they wanted. Even Spyderco sharpens their knives at a shaper angle before they leave the factory. Old school thinking prevails with this product. You can get an edge but not a really great edge.
5.0 Rating Excellent edge - 4/4/2009Four Stone Tri-Angle Sharpmaker Set Medium and Fine Grit Storage Box and Instruction Video5.0000

I am good with sharpening stones and tools. I demand that tools are sharp. This triangle sharpener is by far the best simple method for sharpening blades up to about 10". After 10" length, it requires some skill to control the rate of downward push to the rate of pull. I am consistently able to get extremely sharp edges with much less time than with other sharpening methods. It is more difficult to get a very good edge on longer knives but it is possible to work on one section of the knife at a time to get excellent results. It is also more challenging to get an excellent edge on very large military style knives mostly because the size of the blade obstructs your vision a bit and the handle/grip of the knife itself makes it difficult to keep the blade at the correct verticle angle while sliding down the sharpening edge. I recommend holding such knives more in your fingetips with the thumb on top not in the palm of your hand when controlling the contact of the blade with the stone. I am confident that the poor review above is a result of user error in maintaining the correct angle on the stone. Excellent design.

This thing is awesome! I was kind of leary at first, but took a look at some of the videos on the net with this thing in use. It's very easy to use and comes with a nice DVD and Instruction Manual. Packs up in it's own case. The first day I got it, I did about 12 knives with it and it does a fantastic job. One of the knives was extremely dull. After about 5 minutes working on it, the thing cuts paper like nobody's business and also shaved some hair off of my arm. It also does more than just knives! What good is a dull knife right? Get this sharpener and you won't ever have to worry about that again! Nice job Spyderco!
