I thought a 200 grain .40 cal was an interesting development, having never seen anything above 180 gr (the original weight for the 10mm on which the .40 was based). Tested out of an H&K USP, 4.25" barrel, the results were not quite what I would like from a hollowpoint personal defense round. The expansion was roughly 30% of the original diameter and amounted to just a slight flairing of the bullet tip. Compared to the Remington Golden Saber and Winchester PDF (both 180 gr) which expanded 90-120% under the same conditions. Penetration was also increased in the HPR round by about 25%, which makes sense given its slight expansion and high energy. I've concluded this might be the ideal round for bear protection; heavy to get through thick hide and skull bone, deep penetration to reach vitals, nominal expansion might make it better than a ball round. I'll take it camping, but not into Marion Barry's Ward.
