Semi pointed bullets provide the same penetration as a round nose bullet, but has better trajectory, higher velocity and energy transfer, better expansion control and deeper penetration than a hollow point bullet. At close range, semi pointed bullets usually offer better penetration and more controlled expansion. Semi pointed bullets have excellent accuracy potential and are often used for short to medium range hunting.

Varmint hunting places extreme demands on bullet performance. Such bullets must be exceptionally accurate to hit small targets, lightly constructed to provide explosive expansion while minimizing ricochets, and lightweight to obtain high velocities with flat trajectories. Sierra Varminter bullets are the standard against which other brands are measured.
