The M48 Mauser is a Yugoslavian military surplus rifle. They were built from 1950 to 1965 and most M48s were put into government storage shortly after they were manufactured.

These rifles are shipped coated in the protective grease "cosmoline" which needs to be cleaned out before the rifle is fired.

These rifles are not new, they are military surplus. They do not include an owner's manual nor a warrantee card. The manufacturer, the government of Yugoslavia, disintegrated in a series of wars starting in 1991. These rifles are sold "As is."

To remove cosmoline grease from a military surplus rifle we suggest an aerosol solvent such as Gun Scrubber or bake cleaner and a CLP such as Break Free or G96, and a good bit of "elbow grease"

Lots of cosmoline. Appears they were issued, well taken care of, and then slathered up with cosmo and stored. The bore was mirror bright with sharp lands and sharp crown - YES! Good, tight action. The wood is not pristine, but is a nice hardwood with grain contrast. 90% bluing, good but mismatched bolt (no biggie). All other numbers match. Rifle has a nice feel and balance. Should be an excellent shooter. Lots of life left in this baby. Great chance to get an M48 in 8mm Mauser, that nobody has messed around with, at a very good price. Enjoy!

It is an M48 with machined magazine floor plate. The rifle looks better than expected for a 1943 rifle! Nice bluing, almost in like new condition. Stock has minor scratches. All the numbers match, smooth action, shinny barrel, and strong rifling. It came with a leather sling. Cannot wait to clean it up and take it to the range. Extremely pleased with the purchase of this little piece of history! Get one as soon as you can!

First, the overall look of the rifle was much like I expected. The metal was in better shape, but the wood was in rougher than I hoped. Disassembly was straight forward until I got to the bolt. As I took it apart, I noticed several sharp edges on the cocking piece. Upon cleaning it, I realized that, in fact, it was broken. My M48 is unusable, unless I can find a replacement part.

The rifle looks quite nice but it came with a bent firing pin. If you intend on buying one of these rifles, please note that finding a replacement firing pin is extremely difficult. I have yet to find one website that carries the M48 firing pin or the Model 24 firing pin which also works in the M48. So until I find one, the Mauser remains silent =( But, let's end on an up note: the M48 is built very well and it is one of those rifles that "just feels right" in the hands. It does not come with a bayonet but does come with a relatively useful leather sling. Mine did not come with anything else.

Buying Firearms on the Internet
Federal law requires firearms to be shipped to FFL Dealers. For an individual to receive a firearm from Cheaper Than Dirt! it must be shipped to an FFL Dealer in your state.

Locating a Federal-Firearm License Dealer (FFL) in Your Area
There are thousands of FFL Dealers in the United States. You may choose an FFL Dealer from our preferred listing or you may find a dealer in your area. To find a list of FFL Dealers in your area area CLICK HERE. If you choose a dealer that is not on our preferred list, either you or the FFL Dealer will be required to submit a copy of the Federal Firearms License referencing your Cheaper Than Dirt! order number. The FFL Dealer will usually charge a fee to conduct the transfer. There are duties that the FFL Dealer is required to do during the process which include a background check. Remember, the FFL Dealer is doing you a favor and the process takes time to complete. Fees can vary so check with the FFL Dealer ahead of time to request a quote on the fees associated with your firearm transfer. The FFL Dealer is in business to make a profit and your internet purchase may be viewed as competition to their retail business. If you feel the fees are too high, you can search for another FFL Dealer.

Completing the Transaction
Once you place the firearm in your cart and checkout you will receive a confirmation email that has your order number and further instructions. We will verify the FFL license and also make the FFL Dealer aware that an order from Cheaper Than Dirt! will soon be arriving for you. Most orders are processed within 2-3 business days from the time we receive and verify the FFL Dealers information. Once shipped, your firearm will arrive at the FFL Dealer within 3-7 days business days. The FFL Dealer will begin processing the shipment. It may be an additional day or so before the FFL Dealer is ready to conduct the transfer of the firearm to you. Call the FFL Dealer and set an appointment to confirm that the firearm is ready to be transferred.
