In the past packing a short barrel meant you were dealing with less velocity and less reliable expansion. Speer has created an entire category of specialized ammunition designed specifically for back-up guns. Gold Dot Short Barrel was introduced in 2004 and designed from the ground up to work in 2-inch barrels. Speer ATK redesigned select Gold Dot bullets to make the cavity larger for reliable expansion at the reduced velocities common to short barrel revolvers. You also get less "kick" to keep you on target when wielding sharp snapping small frame guns. Ideal for expansion in barrels as short as three inches.

Accurate, smooth, less flash, less kick, great expansion, and great penetration. BUT remember: they are only for a snub nose.

I've seen a lot of people knock this load for various reasons mostly saying "psh a 357 that only goes 990 fps? just go 38 +p!". What they fail to mention is that this round is designed to fire out of a 2" barrel and will actually go 990 fps. Other 357 loads are designed to be fired bout of 4-6 inch barrels and suffer 25-35% losses in velocity straight out of the barrel. Additionally, the excess powder in these full loads creates a large unwanted muzzle flash if you are carrying a short barrel for self defense. Even if you go w/ a 38 +p, it will still have a considerable amount less than this load does as those to are designed to go out of 4-6 inch barrels. I fired several of these and the recoil is manageable, muzzle flash is not an issue, and they're more accurate than you are. Additionally the bullet itself is designed to expand at lower velocities, something that the full load 357 loads wont do great w/ a 35% loss in velocity right off the bat. Don't listen to people knocking these rounds, Speer knocked it out of the park on this one. If you carry a snub nose 357, buy this.

This load is a great choice for the small frame .357 magnum revolvers such as the J frame Smith & Wesson and five-shot Rugers. The 135 grain load was specially designed for "short barrel" revolvers to maximize penetration and expansion, while minimizing recoil and muzzle flash. I have shot dozens of these from my Smith & Wesson 60 and 649 models and they handle every bit as well as heavier .357 loads fired from the larger L and N frame models. If you carry a small frame .357 magnum revolver for self-defense as a primary or back-up (like I do), you will really appreciate this cartridge. It may not pack the sizeable wallup of the heavier .357 magnum loads, but it delivers more power than a .38 special +P load and with more control and accuracy than you would expect.

I didn't like this one at all. It's whimpy, inaccurate, expensive. Buy some good .38 Special +p if you are recoil-sensitive.
