Hunters taking over for federal sharpshooters
Solebury, PA - Since a highly controversial deer culling program, which used
sharpshooters from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to thin its deer
population, ended about a year ago, Solebury officials have turned to
local hunters to help keep the number of deer down.
A small township deer management committee has paired about a dozen
property owners with more than 200 hunters, said township Manager John
Granger.
"It's working pretty well," he said.
Under the program, property owners are encouraged to allow hunters,
both bow and gun, access to their land to kill deer. It was a plan
endorsed by the USDA Wildlife Services, which strongly encouraged the
township to pursue working cooperatively with hunters.
Besides the hunting control, Granger said, Solebury is working with
the state Game Commission to expedite the permitting process for
hunters who want to hunt after the season.
