Bought 2 and laid them out on the back deck for a week in the sun. That got rid of 95% of the smell. Threw them in the dryer (on air dry, no heat) with 5 dryer sheets and they're good to go....VERY heavy and warm. Check the lint trap every 10 to 15 minutes...it'll be full!

I ordered 2 of these blankets and 2 five gallon collapsible water bottles. The strong mothball smell leached into/through the plastic water bottles and ruined them during shipment. "Mothball 1; Cheaper than dirt 0." Do not order anything else if you decide to get the blankets.

Arrived and stinky as described. Terrific quality, may order more. As others have said, don't open in house and hang outside to get rid of moth ball odor. On the plus side, there is no insect damage and the blankets are factory new and perfect. Definitely recommend, fantastic value once the smell subsides!

A very good product with one HUGE drawback. When you receive your package, don't open it. Take it straight to the dry cleaners and open it there and have them deal with the mothball (naphthalene: very toxic) smell. The odor is the reason for 4 bullets instead of five. Once properly cleaned and deodorized...these are awesome blankets. If you decide to clean them at home: Heat! Lots of heat! Either put them out in the sun for several days/weeks or be prepared for your washer and dryer to stink to high heaven.

I want to ammend my rating to 4 bullets, I mean't to originally, due to the quality and the value of the purchase. I only meant to caution folks not to try and sleep in them with mothball smell. The blankets are definitely worth the money. Just be warned they need to go straight to the clothesline. I also found that laying them in the grass works well for some reason. I think the ground draws out the smell faster than a clothesline in the sun. One blew off the line and it was fully aired out when the other still on the line still smelled heavily of mothballs.

I bought two of these blankets here several years ago when they were 12.99 each. They are better than the Hudson Bay quality. EXTREMELY heavy and warm. Yes they come with an overpowering smell of moth balls. I did not know to simply hang them outside and the smell would go away. I washed them several times WITH a big dose good smelling cheap HAIR CONDITIONER in each wash and they came out soft, and non scratchy, and smelling like your girlfriends hair. HAIR CONDITIONER IN BOTH THE WASH AND RINSE CYCLE WILL KEEP ALL WOOL ITEMS FROM SHRINKING TOO.

Mothballs emit toxic gas that is harmful to you, your children, and pets!! Immediately!! Hang these on a line in the yard in direct sunlight to begin airing out the mothball smell. Do not wash them, or your machine will have the mothball scent for weeks. It will take many days in the sun to remove the smell from the blankets. Reverse the side exposed to the sun regularly. After several days of sun you can then try to wash them. I WISH SOMEONE WOULD HAVE TOLD ME THIS BEFORE I EMERSED MYSELF INTO MOTHBALL HELL. CTD should be liable for not warning people of the information I just gave you.. ENJOY.

I purchased this blanket a few weeks back to put on my single bed. When I opened it it smelt horrible. It took a few days to air out... and some febreeze. Once I put it on my bed I became convinced it was worth the time it took to air out. It is WARM. I'm from Montana...I know about cold winters...this is a great blanket to keep you warm. Yes it will smell horrible when you get it....just keep it on the clothsline for a couple of days turning once a day or so and the smell will go away leaving you with a great wool blanket.

This is a very good blanket. It is Heavy, thick, and very warm. Luckily I read the other reviews before I ordered the item. The moth ball smell wasn't as bad on mine as the other people’s blankets. What I did was first off I put it in the dryer with 2 dryer sheets for about 45 minutes it seemed to get rid of the smell fast. Then I hung it on a line for 2 days, turning it after the first day. Now I have a very good & warm blanket. I will be ordering more in the future. I hope this helps. Thank you.

You could smell them through the box, so I took them outside on the back porch and laid them out over some chairs with the ceiling fan on fast, turning the blankets over in 30 minute intervals for 2 hrs. I then took the blankets inside and threw them in the drier for 40 min. on low heat with 3 dryer sheets. That worked for me. I hope this helps others. I got mine over a week ago and yes it does smell like moth balls. I let this blanket air out for 4 days in the back yard. The wife complained about the smell, but some women will complain about anything. Afterwords I washed mine with Gain & 2 scoops of Oxyclean and yes it does leave lint in washer, but the washer can be cleaned. I just had to do a good job before wife complained again. I then put in the dryer on low with about 20 fabric softener sheets and constantly kept cleaning out the lint filter. It all came out ok from a man’s point of view. I can't complain for price. This is a heavy blanket but it will do the job in case of an emergency. This is a good buy for price. Thanks.

I opened my Cheaper Than Dirt goody box as usual in the foyer of the house, and funkified the house instantly. I suspect some sort of Italian chemical warfare here LOL. Took the blankets outside and hung them up for a week, washed 5 times with fabric softener, then hung outside for another week. Good to go. Thanks for another good product CTD!

I am in the process of washing and drying my 12th blanket. My second order of 6 aired outside under cover for a week, now I'm washing each blanket on warm with OxyClean and liquid Tide, drying on med/low, and washing & drying again. I've done enough blankets recently that I can tell you the smell gets worse when they get wet, and it's the DRYER that gets the smell out. Maybe it's the heat, maybe it's the air flow, maybe it's all the lint coming off the blanket. Probably all of the above! Water doesn't hurt them, and they stand up to a med/warm dryer just fine. But be sure to keep your dryer lint screen cleaned off!! Check it within a few minutes of starting the dryer, and you'll be amazed at how much lint has already accumulated. Keep cleaning it throughout the drying time, and your blanket will dry faster. (And it will be better for your dryer!) I came back on here to share my observation about the dryer helping with the smell, and I see that the blankets are "out of stock". I'm not surprised -- these are great blankets. And now I wonder if I should buy even more, just to have on hand, or to give away....

So, when I received these I took them straight to the backyard. The MB stench was noticeable but it seemed for the most part that everyone was exaggerating. They have been airing out since Saturday evening. It is now Tuesday almost 3 AM and it just rained here in SoCal. The rain has released a lot of the MB stench! People weren't exaggerating, it's keeping me awake. I'm pretty sure the whole block can smell it. I feel bad. I'm sure once the stench goes away these will be worth every penny! Does anyone know if the rain ruins these things?

I just placed my second order for 6 of these blankets. I received the first 6 a month ago. Yes, they smelled strongly of mothballs, but I draped them around my husband's fishing boat in the open garage and aired them for a week. I Then washed each one at home in lukewarm water with OxyClean and liquid Tide, I dried on med/low, and repeated with another wash and dry. They ended up soft and fresh smelling. I use one on top of our mattresses, one underneath the sheets (for added warmth), as well as one on top of the bedspread. I just hope I haven't jinxed hubby's boat! Because I just ordered 6 more -- our church is requesting blankets and sleeping bags for homeless young people in our area. I will give them the blankets I've already washed, and get ready for the next batch of 6. For this price, and this quality, I am more than happy to give them away to someone who really needs them. Awesome wool blankets. Thank you!

I bought two of these wool blankets after reading all the reviews before-hand. I Knew what to do as soon as they arrived...from the front door, straight to the back yard, I opened up the box and put them on the clothes line for 3 days. On the third day I hosed them down and left them on the line for 3 more days. Next I took them to the commercial laundry and put both of the blankets in the heavy duty front loader using a small box of baking soda, half a bottle of Tide (small bottle), and almost a full bottle of Snuggle softener. Next I put them both in the commercial dryer for 35 minutes on medium dry. I Brought them home and put them on the line for 2 hours to finish drying. They smell great, much softer! Great product!

Bought two of these. Just arrived at the house. Both came wrapped in individual plastic bags, one smelled mothballish, the other had so many white crystals of chemical on it that I almost repacked it and returned it. I decided to get a brush and try to knock them off. I would guess there was close to a cup full of visible white chemical crystals on the blanket. I will work with it V/s returning it. I would have given a five bullet review if they were both like the first one. I knew they would be smelly from the reviews I read here.

Finally took them BOTH to laundromat, placed in seperate oversized washer with regular detergent and NO FAB SOFTENER TO MASK THE MOTH CRYSTAL ODOR. They came out smelling only like wet wool instead of softener which is what I was checking for. I line dried them all day in the warm wind. These are a WONDEFUL BARGAIN!

These blankets are about what I expected. They are large, heavy, tightly woven wool of excellent quality. DO NOT WASH THEM OR PUT THEM IN A HOT DRYER! Air them in the sun for a few hours. When they get dusty take them outside and shake the daylights out of them then hang them on a clothesline for a couple of hours. I bought two and I'm going to buy some more. Uncle Al

It is a heavy, brown-green-grey colored blanket with white stripes. Feels heavy-duty enough to swordfight in, but soft enough to snuggle in. Smells of moth balls, and the remedy is to air for a day in the sun, followed by a COLD WATER ONLY washing. Heat shrinks wool so be careful when drying. If I can get my ma's permission, I'll probally get two more for the price. NOTE: My blanket has a black, fist sized stamp on one side that's in Italian. RALLY AWESOME!!!

The chemical had leached through the plastic and into the cardboard box. Smelled up my office, car, garage, etc... Washed them Friday night and still smelled strongly. So did the laundromat when I was done. But now they have aired out outside over the weekend and I used one last night on my bed. Loved it! Such a nice quality blanket. I bought two of these blankets; for the price they are a good buy. They came packaged in clear plastic. The mothball smell was strong when I opened the package, but after hanging the blankets outside on a windy day with plenty of sun, the smell is very faint at most; nothing to lose sleep over; I did not wash my blankets - they appear NEW. The size is perfect for most occasions I have found and the light grey color with the tan stripes makes the blanket somewhat attractive. I'm in the process of order two more for my emergency kit. One other note, I had one blanket arrive with two small cuts (about an inch in size) I contacted CTD who provided free shipping to replace the damaged blanket. I would recommend these blankets to anyone - Good quality and heavy duty!

OMG if you buy one of these blankets and you don't take my advice seriously, shame on you. lol. Please DO NOT open inside your home. I received mine today before work and opened the box it came in. Of course the bag had a quarter sized hole in it. Holy moly, had to run it outside. I placed it on a table to air out, and it started to rain while I was at work, so my husband decided to bring it in and left it in the garage. The smell was so overwhelming when I returned home from work. Moth balls are a pesticide and are very toxic. The amount they use is extremely overboard and will kick you on your butt. I mean breathing problems, so do not put in the wash before you air them out. Better yet after airing , take them to a laundry mat. Protect your family and pets. On a good note you can't buy a heavier blanket for your money. 5 ***** minus the smell.

Bought one of these blankets last year, and I am so glad I did! Layered between a flannel sheet and a quilt, it provided wonderful warmth, even on the coldest winter nights! There's nothing better than pure wool for warmth, and I can't wait for it to get cold to use it again! As many others have mentioned, make sure you air them out before using them, to rid them of the strong mothball scent. At the end of the winter, I recommend dry cleaning and storage in a cedar chest to deter moths. This blanket is so nice, you're sure to be pleased with it!

DO NOT WASH THIS IN YOUR HOUSE/APARTMENT. I aired this outside for four hours, and mothball smell went away. Thinking all was fine, I put it in the washing machine, which suddenly released so much toxic mothball fumes that I thought I'd have to ditch both my washer and my apartment permanently. Lesson: first let it air outside in the sun for SEVERAL DAYS, then take it to a laundromat to wash/dry. Or wash it OUTSIDE with hot water in a tub, and let it air dry in the sun for SEVERALS DAYS. Then for good measure take it to a laundromat and stick it in the drier with six sheets for the heat to evaporate the mothballs. I swear that stuff is vile and the stench gets on everything. Don't let that blanket into your house until all mothball odor is gone, or you will regret it. Other than that, the blanket itself though is thick, heavy, warm, and very good quality.

Well, here we have a 5 pound wool blanket. I would use this on trips driving up in my Plymouth Voyager to western New York state in late fall, early winter and when I would pull over to sleep for a bit, I'd use the blanket as a "topper". A cotton blanket would go over me, and the wool blanket on top of that. And despite freezing temperatures, with frost on the window, I'd sleep (relatively) comfortable. The mothball smell was awful, and took a long while to get rid of it, but that was the only negative!

Add me to the whole lot of people jumping up and down about these blankets! WOW! --just AWESOME! I aired mine out for only 1 day (10 hours) and zero moth-bally smell remains. One (of the two I purchased) I shook enough sand from to create quite a dust cloud -- but hey I figure that just adds to the authenticity! After an airing and a cleaning --These are the DEAL OF THE CENTURY! I might just buy 2 more before they're gone!

Outstanding blanket. Great bargain. Just take it out of the package, and hang it out side. The mothball smell will go away in a day or two. I'm going to buy another one

Very heavy and warm blanket for a cheap price!! Like others have reported, you have to hang it outside to let it air out to get rid of the moth ball smell. Definitely a good buy for the price!!

Hmm... the description says comfortable... I don't like to touch this thing with any bare part of my body. It is most definitely not comfortable, but it is big, heavy and wool. I did smell of mothballs, and most of the smell is gone after several days outside airing out, but you can still smell it. Good emergency blanket, but I don't think I'll find much more use for it as I thought I would.

Not for backpacking, due to the bulk and weight...but you won't find a 100% wool, heavy blanket of this quality anywhere else for less money. Once you have aired it out properly, store it in something like a large Zip-lock bag, to ensure moth larvae don't eat it. Real Italian quality, for cheap. This is a very good quality wool blanket.

A fine blanket. I bought got a few several years ago from CTD and have been using them ever since. In the winter I keep one in my car and use another on my bed. Its a little small for it, but I'm not complaining. An all around great product for the Andrew Jackson!

Purchased one unit for now. Just like everyone else says, "Smells like mothballs just out of the bag"! Folks, Hang the unit on the line, drape it over a fence or bench. In the sunshine of course. Let the smell evaporate. For way, way, low money, you will have a warm, heavy, blanket that will last for years. Huge piece of wool in GREAT shape that will last . I could not be more pleased with the purchase. For what most all of us will be using them for, you cannot go wrong. Better get two or three. I am ordering 2 more most ricky tic. Before I close, VOTE in November. Think freedom, not socialism. Please!

I ordered one of these blankets. Right out of the bag I noticed the terrible smell of moth balls. Instantly put it in the washing machine. DO NOT DO THAT. The smell was just as bad, maybe worse after it came out. Aired it outside and in about two days the smell was completely gone. It took about 3 days for the moth ball smell to leave the washing machine and laundry room. I ordered two more and hung them outside right out of the box. In about 3 hours the smell was completely gone.

I ordered two of these blankets. As usual, with CTD orders, they arrived quickly. As with previous reviews, there is a strong odor of moth balls about the blankets (nothing that a little airing out won't take care of). As far as I can tell, these blankets look brand new - if they were used, they were used very gently. All in all a great price for a solid wool blanket.

I bought two of these wonderful blankets. Buy a bottle of the cheapest, GOOD SMELLING HAIR CREAM RINSE and after the moth ball smell is gone, pour the WHOLE BOTTLE of cream rinse into the washer with the blanket during the LAST RINSE to make the blanket soft and cuddly and eliminate the itchy or scratchy feel of wool. It will make the blanket smell so nice too.

I own twenty of these blankets, along with ten of the other styles. Please folks, let this be the final word onthe moth proofing. DO NOT WASH THEM FIRST! Set them out on a line and let the odor evaporate. For the really heavy blankets it takes about two to two and a half days for the smell to leave depending on how much sun is available to help it evaporate. Washing them first really only makes your house, dryer and washer reek and honestly doesn't do much to get rid of the smell. If you have already done this the odor will eventually leave the dryer and washer. Just takes a while. And, do you really want to take an item that smells like it is overloaded with naptha and stick it in a dryer? Really? These are warm, heavy, durable and the best part is they are used so they don't shrink when washed in cold water and put in the dryer. They will shed some. No more expensive wool blankets from Bed, Bath and Beyond that you have to dry clean. Costs as much or more to dry clean those as it does for one of these wonderful blankets. As for the scratchiness, I sew two sheets together and make a duvet for them. Stick the blanket inside with a series of snaps on the open end of the sheets and you have an excellent blanket for the winter months. They are also great for use as batting in a quilt. Just expect the dry time to be longer. The best thing about wool blankets for camping is they can get wet (rain etc.) and you can still sleep under them and be warm. I have turned the white ones into coats for my husband when he goes hunting, just needs a lining. I can't say enough good things about these blankets. Stock up.

These are a value at the price offered. In order to get the mothball smell out, make sure to FIRST leave them outside 2 days (best way to reduce the extremely heavy smell), then put them through 2 - 3 washs. Either use the 6 sheets of Bounce in the dryer approach, or let them airdry on the clothesline.

These blankets are heavy weight, like new and of good quality. The mothball smell is overpowering at first, but one washing (just one is enough) and a day hanging on a clothes line in the sun will remove it. (Mothballs are made from naptha, which is volatile. Sunlight will simply make it evaporate.)

Really a big blanket. I am 5' 9" and it covers me up easily. I can even double it over and be covered although the sides get a little drafty. I don't mind the smell of moth balls normally, in fact I rather like the smell. The moth ball smell of this blanket is absolutely over powering. After about 5 minutes under it my head was hurting due to fumes. It is a really heavy blanket, first wool blanket I have ever purchased and the weight was surprising. It is warm though, and not too itchy. New condition, you can't go wrong with this.

I got the blanket, wasn't too stinky, stuck it outside while i was at work to air out, no problem. It's the "throwing it in the washer" that brings out the moth ball scent. I figure they dipped these blankets in the formula for moth balls and then in a starch-ish formula. 3 washes and about 10 dryer sheets later, mine came out fine :) Definetly recommend getting one at least.

I Bought 2 of them, as far as the quality and warmth of these things go they are awesome. They are definately worth the money (however you have to factor in the shipping on these are quite pricy) still worth it. The main thing is, nobody is exaggerating on the smell of these suckers, they stink to high heaven!!! 3 Washes with woolite Gentle cycle cold water + Dry on low heat with 6 dryer sheets as said before does the trick.

Great blankets, found no signs of them ever being used... Washed the blankets and used 6 dryer sheets each when drying, smell is still there but not as strong, put blankets in sealed trashbags w/ dryer sheets to see if that will get out the final bit of stench. downside: my entire neighborhood smells like mothballs now, washing machine smells so bad it may need to be replaced.

These blankets are virtually unobtainable anywhere else that I know of. I can't say enough good things about them. The price probably makes them the most reasonable buy CTD has. The moth balls odor that other reviewers have reported are a minor issue as far as I am concerned. They probably wouldn't be available if they had not been stored properly! These things are the kind of quality that you might have seen back in the 1870s through maybe the 1930s. They are big and heavy and deliver the kind of warmth that breaths. You won't be hot and sweaty under these things. Sandwich them between two cotton sheets and you'll be warm all winter at home or camping. Wash out or air out the preservative odor and hide them between designer sheets and you'll have a super comfortable sleep not obtainable under polyester or cotton/poly blend blankets. I use them in my cowboy bedroll and they are absolutely authentic, not to mention warm and comfortable. They are perfect for re-enactors. The heavy wool content and brown-and-tan color allow them easily fit into the mid-to-late 19th Century time frame. I also use them as horse blankets. Fold them lengthwise and then over on themselves again for a 32" x 40" horse blanket. And, they are 100% wool, the best there is. After riding, unfold them to dry quickly over a fence or a rack. They'll last forever with reasonable care, and wash up very well. I make old-style rifle and shotgun cases out of them, too, by sewing them together with heavy canvas and creating a zipperless, open-ended case. The uses for these blankets are endless. If you buy ten of them, you'll be kicking yourself for not buying twenty of them!

Great blanket. Funny how the price went up 2 bucks when the word got out about the good quality of these blankets at ARFCOM. Presumably they already had their surplus supply on hand, so I doubt THEIR cost went up. Still a good deal though. I bought 4 when they were less than 9 bucks and I wish I had bought 6 or more.

I bought this blanket for a fall camping trip. They looked brand new. However they smelled like moth balls. I washed them in cold water twice. The smell was still there. I put them in the dryer on low heat with about 6 fabric softers and the smell was gone. It's a great deal once you get rid of the smell.
