So
you're looking for that special deer rifle, or you need a dozen
long guns for your Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team? When
pricing a decent long gun, especially one that's designated a
sniper rifle, agency bureaucrats and the men and women who employ
such guns in the line of duty must figure cost into the equation.
No
one wants to scrimp on public safety, much less the safety of our
officers. And sports men and women don't want to risk losing
that trophy whitetail or shooting match.
So
if shelling out four grand for that precision rifle and expensive
monthly maintenance is not in your budget, there are options
like the Savage 10FP or 110FP.
The 10FP is the short action version, .308 Winchester
and similar chamberings, and the 110FP is the long action gun (i.e.,
.30-06 Springfield and above).
The LE designation stands for Law Enforcement.
Those of us that have viewed the flood of outdoor
programs on Saturday mornings have no doubt noticed the adverts
promoting Savage Arms rifles-and their new Accutrigger.
The Accutrigger was designed to allow personalized trigger
adjustment, from a feather light 1 1/2 pounds of pull to 6
pounds, without a gunsmith's attention.
Nicolas
Brewer designed this rifle in the mid-1950s, and the 10FP and 110FP
is manufactured by Savage Arms in Westfield, Massachusetts.
The Accutrigger, the gun's floating and optional,
heavy barrel enhances accuracy.
Both the 10FP and the 110FP feature an oversized
rotating bolt and internal magazine capacity of four rounds. The gun
comes in 5.56x45mm NATO (.223), the NATO standard 7.62x51mm (.308),
7.62x63mm or .30-06 and the .300 Winchester Magnum. For military or
LE sniper use-the .308 or .300 win Mag is the gun of choice.
The 10FP and 110FP comes with a polymer stock, but
numerous choices exist from the Ultimate Sniper, with a plastic
skeleton butt reminiscent of the Dragunov, to the McMillan
fiberglass, the HS Precision and Choate Folding Stocks. A pair of
Savage models come with a Leupold 3.5-10x40mm scope complete with a
Mil Dot reticle-just what the doctor ordered for those pesky,
hard to reach out and touch-bad guys.
Great for taking down all kinds of pesky critters-the
Savage 10FP and 110FP.
