Brugger+Thomet MP9 Submachinegun
This little baby just looks mean…I mean, mad-dog mean.
It’s tiny and compact and it looks like it is capable of spitting a hail of lead.
If the Brugger+Thomet MP 9 looks vaguely familiar, it’s because it was modeled after another popular submachinegun (SMG), an awesome machinespistole made by the Austrians—the Steyr TMP (tactical machine pistol). And at 900 rounds per, it spits lead!
The Brugger+Thomet MP 9 got its start when Steyr introduced the TMP in the early 1990s. Steyr-Mannlicher produced its TMP and later sold the manufacturing rights at the turn of the 21st century to Switzerland’s Brugger+Thomet, due to lagging sales.
That’s when the engineers at B+T went to work redesigning the TMP.
What was called for, what B+T hoped to develop, was a smaller version of full-sized SMGs, something more on the order of the machine pistols (e.g., Glock 18 or Beretta 93R) that was compact and lacked major recoil when operated in full-auto mode.
When the dust settled and the engineers stepped back to admire their handiwork, B+T had affected well over a dozen alterations to an already promising weapon.
And the Swiss Brugger+Thomet MP 9 was born.
The B+T MP 9 is a recoil-operated, locked breech select-fire SMG that is chambered for 9x19mm Luger/Parabellum ammunition. Sans a 15-, 20-, 25- or 30-round magazine, the B+T MP 9 weights a modest three pounds. With its lightweight, polymer shoulder stock extended, the weapon measures just 20.6 inches in length. With the stock folded to one side, it measures a concealable, tiny 11.9 inches. That’s lean and mean.
The MP 9 can cycle 900 rounds per through its five-inch barrel, but downrange, its effective range is a severely abbreviated 164 (50 meters) to 328 feet (100 meters).
But keep in mind, the MP 9 was not intended as a long-range shooting iron. Rather, it was designed to clear rooms and small spaces and to serve as a close quarter combat weapon (CQC) of death for those unfortunate hostiles found on the business end of its stubby barrel. The MP 9 integrated rail accepts a range of optics for any and all occasions, and with its silencer, it represents a formidable executive protection SMG.
