Shinai all come in the same quality no matter were you buy. You should use gloves, however the shinai themselves work smashingly. ElderPete and his son obviously swing in huge arcs for those to break. I've trained in the sword for several years with both real swords and shinai. The shinai did exactly what they're supposed to do.

I got a couple Shinais for Christmas for my 14 year old son and I to spar with. Within two 15 minute sparring session, one Shinai was broken beyond the help of duct tape, and the other was well on its way. These are cheap practice weapons, but I guess I got what I paid for.

My son and I practice sword fighting and these are cool because the split bamboo allows you to really swing but not hurt the other guy, kind of bends on impact so you don't bruise them. Leather handle was nice but I am a sure the real sword would feel different to swing. You can play for hours and not get hurt but I would wear gloves as only our hands would get wacked. Kind of scary because you see in a real sword fight you be dead in just seconds on the first mistake. Great quality and I saw them in a store for $40, so these were a bargain.
