The 20mm M61 Vulcan Cannon Rounds are a great piece to display with the rest of my Dads Medals. He was in the Air Force, and a Wild Weasel flying in the F-105F Thunderchief. The 20mm M61 Vulcan Cannon was the only weapon besides a heat seeker to defend against the MIG-17's & MIG-19's in the skys over Viet Nam. He was an Electrionic Warfare Officer (EWO). He sat in the back seat and told the pilot when the North Vietnamese would turn on there Radar & Fire a SAM at them (surface to air missle). The Wild Weasel's first started out with the F-100F in 1965, in May of 1966 the F-105F's deployed to Korat Thialand and took over the roll of the Wild Weasel's. Over 75% of the sorties were flown in the F-105 Thunderchief, There Moto was "First In Last Out". They would fly in ahead of the Strike Force and play chicken with the operators of the SAM Sites, to keep them from firing at the Strike Force. After a SAM was fired, they would start down going head to head with the SAM. They would start a yo-yo manuever, going up & down untill the SAM couldn't keep turning with them, then they would turn away, point the nose of there air craft at the radar and shoot a Shrike & 2.75 rockets to distroy the radar site or VAN, then they would finish the job with 500lb. bombs. My Father was shot down by Flack and is still listed as; Missing In Action 4, Nov. 1966.
