| first: CTD seems to keep only one of these on hand at any given time, and for some reason their email system didn't notify me when they got one in stock, so I'm sort of bummed about that. Difficulty of acquisition aside, this is the best price on the net, and when I did finally get one ordered, it arrived the next day (I wonder if this has to do with member status, as i only selected 3day fedex)
THE BARREL ITSELF IS NOTHING SHORT OF AMAZING.
13oz feels like a lot less than one would think. the standard barrel weighs in at about 2lbs, simply switching barrels drops a little more than a pound in weight off of the rifle (as opposed to adding 2 or 3 with an all steel barrel) more importantly, it changes the center of gravity on the rifle, and moves it much closer to your hand, making offhand shooting much easier thanks to the improved balancing. The picture also does this barrel no justice, it looks much better on your rifle ;)
accuracy: I have not had a chance yet to try some high quality ammo, however with cheap bulk pack federal champion, there are no FEED issues. (the champion seems not to be properly cycling the bolt, but I'm not sure that has anything to do with the barrel, I have been changing a lot of things with it lately.) My groupings are about a quarter at 100 yards and I am by no means the most accurate guy on the block. I suspect with this ammo and barrel combo its capable of nickels or better (with cheap ammo mind you) I am very confident that this thing is capable of so much more with good ammo, but I have not had a chance to feed it properly yet.
there are SOME downsides, but really only if you have further plans.
1: cannot be threaded to accept a compensator or suppressor. this is due to the end cap design, and i doubt that any future models will be featuring a threaded muzzle either. (I had a lot of correspondence with Magnum research about this)
2: graphite is not...."tough" sure its stiff and accurate, but be careful, its easy to scratch (wont affect accuracy, but its aesthetically depressing)
3: for the above mentioned reason, if you duracoat over the ever so beautiful graphite, be sure you like the color because you wont be able to safely sand it off.
no flaws at all to speak of. the barrel is as advertised, a featherlight tack hammer.
the barrel ships in a plastic tube with one blue sheet from magnum research with careful instructions about installation. The shank fits very tightly into the receiver, and i tapped mine in with a rubber mallet. MR recommends lightly lubricating the receiver and barrel shank (after a thorough cleaning of course) to ease installation.
5 bullets well deserved. |
